The Department of Chemistry at Al-Leith University College organized an educative activity on the role of chemistry in our life entitled, 'Food additives'. It aimed at informing students about food additives, and their importance in preserving food against corruption and microbial spoilage. It also tackled the diseases caused by these food additives if they were overused in large quantities and for long periods of time, such as neurological disorders, metabolic disorders, heart disease, cancer, allergy, and hyperactivity in children who eat large quantities of attractively colored and flavored candy that contain food additives.
The activity aimed at informing female students about additives, such as colorings, stabilizers and flavors, which are used in manufacturing fragrance and cosmetics, and whose overuse for long periods causes allergic diseases.
