Students from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Participate with Innovative Projects in "Hajjathon 4"

Students from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Participate with Innovative Projects in 'Hajjathon 4'

Several male and female students from the **Department of Tourism and Hospitality at the College of Management and Economics at Umm Al-Qura University** have participated with innovative projects in the fourth edition of **"Hajjathon 4"**. This event was held as part of the 26th Scientific Symposium for Hajj, Umrah, and Visit Research under the theme: "Excellence and Integration in the Hajj and Umrah Services System."

This participation is an extension of the department’s efforts to promote active and project-based learning, encouraging students to translate the knowledge and skills acquired from academic courses and graduation projects into innovative, practical solutions. These solutions address real-world challenges in the tourism and hospitality sectors, specifically within the Hajj and Umrah services ecosystem.

The students participated with four innovative projects, as follows:

**"Smart Verification for Changing Hotel Linens" project**, presented by student **Anas Al-Hulaifi** from the Hotel Management track, which proposes employing smart solutions to enhance the quality of hotel operations and services.

**"Majra" Platform**, presented by female students **Maya Nami Al-Sulami, Leen Mazen Al-Mutrafi, and Ru’a Humaid Al-Saeedi**.

**"Rafeeq – The Smart Travel Assistant" project**, presented by students **Omar Zuhdi Abu Bakr Al-Attas, Bashar Al-Sulaimani, and Fares Al-Harbi**, which conceptualizes the integration of smart technologies to enhance the traveler experience.

**"Mo'een Bracelet" project**, presented by students **Rawasi Muhammad Al-Sawayhiri and Leen Mazen Al-Mutrafi** within the Crowd Management track. The project successfully qualified among the competing entries out of **167 submissions in this track**. The students reached the pitching stage, presenting and defending their idea before the judging panel in an experience that highlights their ability to develop innovative solutions addressing operational challenges in the Hajj and Umrah system.

These participations reflect the department's commitment to achieving key learning outcomes, including innovation, problem-solving, analytical thinking, teamwork, communication, presentation, and the integration of modern technology in tourism and hospitality. This is accomplished by providing students with opportunities to apply their academic knowledge in real-world contexts and participate in specialized initiatives and competitions.

Furthermore, the students' participation in "Hajjathon 4" represents a practical model for active learning strategies. It shifts the students' role from passive recipients of knowledge to active problem solvers, solution designers, team players, and innovators who pitch and discuss their ideas before specialists and judges. This directly bridges the gap between academic learning outcomes and actual professional practice.

By supporting student participation in such events, the department emphasizes the integration of academic study and professional application. It encourages students to develop ideas originating from coursework and graduation projects into scalable, applicable initiatives. Ultimately, this prepares graduates to innovate and contribute effectively to the development of the tourism and hospitality sectors, as well as to serving the Guests of Allah (Pilgrims).

This participation aligns with the Department of Tourism and Hospitality’s strategic direction to provide an interactive, student-centered learning environment that empowers students as active partners in the learning process and solution creation. It also reinforces the alignment of academic programs with labor market needs and the national objectives for developing the tourism, hospitality, and Hajj and Umrah sectors in the Kingdom.

The Department of English Launches a Number of Research Groups

The Department of English Launches a Number of Research Groups

The Department of English is pleased to announce the launch of seven research groups. Three of these groups are based on the department’s main disciplines (Linguistics, Literary Studies and Translation Studies) and their aim is to continue research in the department’s existing areas of interest, while also broadening the scope of its research by introducing new ideas within these disciplines.

The group Computer Corpus Research on Language aims to establish the field as a new area of interest in the department. A fast-growing field which is useful to the department’s different disciplines as it aims to engage with the application of corpus techniques in any type of research.

The three remaining research groups aim to focus on research areas of local priority:

In response to the Saudi Vision 2030 that aspires to welcome more pilgrims, Umm Al-Qura University has identified Hajj and Umrah studies as an area of responsibility given its unique geographical location at the heart of the holy city of Makkah. The university has proposed ‘enriching the pilgrims’ experience’ as one of its research priorities and has included art, language and literature among the contributing disciplines. To that end, the department recognizes the importance of conducting Hajj and Umrah research through its different disciplines, and has thus established the Hajj and Umrah research group.

Considering the university’s unique geographical location in the land of the two holy mosques and at the heart of the Arab and Muslim world, the department also recognises its role in conducting research on Islam and the Middle East, and has for that purpose established the Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies group.

The department has established the Theatre, Film and Culture research group to work towards the 2030 Vision of celebrating national identity and supporting the Saudi National Culture Strategy, and to invest in the locally emerging research priorities that involve Saudi cultural studies.

We believe that these research groups are strategically important for our department as they aim to bring together faculty members who share similar interests for the purpose of encouraging academic research, promoting collaboration, developing projects, sharing expertise and strengthening the quality of research on a departmental and institutional level.

The Institute Holds a Training Course Entitled: “Introducing and Benefiting from Patents”

As part of the training courses and development lectures held during the first semester of the academic year 1443 A.H., the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research at Umm Al-Qura University held a training course on Wednesday, 14 Rabi` Al-Awwal 1443 A.H. The course took place in the research tent at the institute's headquarters in Al-Aziziyah and was entitled: “Introducing and Benefiting from Patents”.

At the beginning of the session, the trainer spoke about patents and their importance in supporting the knowledge economy, progress and prosperity, both scientifically and practically. He then introduced patents and explained the difference between them and innovations and other proprietary rights, such as copyrights, trademarks, industrial models, etc.

Within the same vein, the trainer underscored the importance of legal knowledge regarding how to maintain rights, whether for innovations, patents, or authorships, so that the efforts of the researcher are recognized and their rights are not attributed to others. “Patents are mostly in applied research that yield products and their registration contribute to protection against commercial exploitation of the invention,” he expounded.

Moreover, he noted that a patent is a property document issued by a governmental body and is inheritable and transferable, within a limited period of time, to ensure that the patent and product are protected from remanufacturing and sale.

At the end of the course session, the trainer answered the questions posed by the participants. Finally, the Dean of the College honored and appreciated the trainer for his outstanding course and various benefits it included.
