Overview

As a result of globalization, universities now face an open challenge and competition between each other to occupy the best ranks at the national, regional and international levels. Therefore, each of them has tried to make use, in its own way, of the latest advancements of technology in hardware, software and networks to serve the educational process and develop its outputs.

Similarly, Umm Al-Qura University has endeavored to prepare strategic and operational plans to develop the educational process, ensure the quality of its outputs, and assure their being in line with the needs of the labor market, thereby embodying the objectives of the Saudi vision 2030. The university entrusted the Deanship of Information Technology with the task of spreading the culture of using information technology and activating it. This is achieved by joining the National Transformation Program 2020 and the E-Government Transformation Program (Yesser) and by using advanced infrastructure, networks, applications, and programs that ensure the quick, safe and professional provision of services required for all the beneficiaries, including the students, academic staff, and employees.

Through its strategic plan, the Deanship of Information Technology seeks to achieve a number of objectives set and defined via a clear-cut vision and mission which aims to achieve these goals. The objectives are as follows:

• To provide an advanced infrastructure linking all the university headquarters and branches.
• To apply local and international specifications and standards.

The Deanship of Information Technology has set an organizational structure to serve as an effective tool to achieve the objectives of its strategic plan. Among the most important specific objectives of the deanship is to continue the process of construction and development of a platform that includes a modern and advanced infrastructure along with up-to-date and developed networks, databases, applications and programs. Moreover, the deanship seeks to maintain the information security of the university network, to ensure the smooth running of the basic daily operations, and to develop new applications for the portal.

The deanship also aims to offer a wide range of electronic services to ensure constructive communication between the different members of the university community, including the students, academic staff, and employees. This has been implemented in order to serve the educational process and to ensure the quality of its outcomes through the use of state-of-the-art techniques, with the help of outstanding and experienced staff.
