The College of Applied Sciences, under the auspices of the Vice Dean of the College, Dr. Rajaa bint Taher Ma`touq, represented by the Physics and Chemistry Departments, held a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign under the slogan "Prevention Is Safety," on Wednesday 2 Rabi` Al-Awwal 1441 A.H., in conjunction with the National Campaign for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which lasted until the end of October.
The College of Applied Sciences aims to increase community education, and employ such events to educate the current generation and serve the community. In addition, it aims to highlight its many benefits that undoubtedly reflect the full knowledge of the needs of society and the attempt to promote it, and uphold the supreme goals and tender giving, in a way that achieves the objectives and mission of the college in the service of society.
In this spirit, under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Noha Filmban, Deputy Head of the Department of Physics, under the supervision of Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Amer, and Her Excellency Dr. Omaima Bawazir, with the participation of Medical Physics students, the Physics Department conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.
The campaign included several themes; it included different diagnostic methods, the difference between each, and when they are to be selected. It also touched on using mammograms for diagnosis, and the importance of periodic checkups for early detection, which increases the chances of recovery. Different methods of treatment, including radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy were presented. Likewise, light was shed on the latest treatment techniques, such as Nanoparticle Therapy, which falls under the name of "Targeted Therapy" for the treatment of cancer cells without affecting the normal cells as in the traditional means of treatment. Under the slogan of "Prevention Is Safety," the female students reviewed various natural prevention methods of breast cancer, such as regular exercise, eating healthy foods, and others.
The Department of Chemistry, under the auspices of Her Excellency Dr. Tahani Bawazir, Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry, and the supervision of Dr. Alia Alfi, Ms. Hawazen Al-Utaibi, Ms. Rajaa Nuqali, and the participation of chemistry students, participated in World Breast Cancer Awareness Day. It highlighted the importance of breast cancer awareness in males due to the presence of tissues in their bodies similar to those in women, and that chances of having the disease increase with age. The students' participation materialized in the making of an educational corner of their own, through which they expressed their interest in raising awareness about breast cancer and its methods of treatment, in addition to the need for early detection and providing necessary support for women who have the disease.
Dr. Rajaa Ma`touq stressed that the College of Applied Sciences is always keen to provide care and health education in the best way for all society. She added that the campaign targeted all women in the Makkah region, to make them more aware of the latest methods of early detection, and their impact on the high rate of full recovery, Allah willing.
