Under the auspices of Her Excellency Dr. Sarah Al-Khuli, the UQU Vice President, and in the presence of the Vice Dean Dr. Rajaa bint Taher Ma`touq, the College of Applied Sciences, represented by the Department of Chemistry, held an event entitled "You Are All Chemistry 3" on the occasion of Arabic Week for Chemistry on Wednesday, 2 Rabi` Al-Awwal 1441 A.H.
The event was inaugurated by the Dean of University Studies, Dr. Samira Al-Abdali, in the presence of the Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Tahani Bawazir, the deputy heads of the various departments, and a number of visiting leaders, academic staff members, and employees. The event was also attended by representatives of the Department of Education in Makkah, a delegation of high school female students, and a number of students from the Department of Chemistry. The event aimed to educate students about the vitality of chemistry, and its being an essential part of life, through different corners that contributed to the achievement of the desired goal.
The corners covered various disciplines, including a Breast Cancer Corner; few of us know that breast cancer can affect both genders, not just women; that males have a very small percentage of tissues similar to those found in women; and that chances of exposure to the disease increase with age, may Allah keep us healthy.
The event also included the Corner of Chemistry for Colors and Fun; the most beautiful thing about chemistry is its wonderful colors resulting from its beautiful interactions; some interesting scientific experiments were conducted. Innovative student-generated games were introduced to support chemistry learning in fun and easy ways, thus making learners active and effective. Some films were also screened on chemistry topics in the Cinema Corner.
In the Corner of Forensic Chemistry, an experiment was presented showing the role of forensic chemistry and how to link Luminol to a crime scene, and determine the exact time of death. In the Corner of Chemistry Hooligans, some paper games were made for the periodic table, and some simple interactions were made.
In the Plastic Project Corner, chemical recycling was done, and a lot of nutritional information was presented, including finding out why coffee is bitter.
The Organic Chemistry Corner introduced some organic antidepressants, and oils and natural products extracts, such as lavender oil, diamonds, and gemstones. In addition, there was a presentation of some elements of the periodic table and their presence and uses in nature.
There was a tour around the corners of chemistry and its importance in our lives, as coffee chemistry, which talked about the composition of coffee, and the chemistry of soap, perfume and natural colors, and ways of their distillation, etc.
At the end of the event, the Vice Dean of the College of Applied Sciences, Her Excellency Dr. Rajaa Ma`touq, expressed her thanks to the Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Tahani Bawazir, their Excellencies the faculty members, employees and female students for their efforts in initiating the event to advance the university community and educate the Arab public on the vitality of chemistry.
