The College of Public Health and Health Informatics organized a scientific lecture titled, "How to Write Vision & Mission" on Monday 16th Jumada I 1438H (13th February 2017). The lecture which was given by Prof. Adel Abo-Seif Abdulmaqsoud, Professor at and Supervisor of the Health Services Management Department at the UQU College of Public Health and Health Informatics, aimed at raising the capacity of the College's staff members and exchanging experiences among its employees.
On the other hand, the lecture was attended by Dr. Waheeb bin Dakheel-Allah al-Harbi (Dean of the College), Dr. Fadil bin Muhammad Banjar (Vice Dean of the College for Educational Affairs), a number of Department Supervisors and many staff members at the College.
At the beginning of the lecture Dr. Abo-Seif reviewed the definition and characteristics of both the vision and mission, and the diversity of views on which ranked first. He explained that the mission stood for the role played by the institution on a daily basis, while the vision was the dream the institution aspired to achieve. He added that both had properties in terms of content and wording.
During the lecture, Prof. Abo-Seif demonstrated a number of miscellaneous forms of visions and missions at universities and colleges inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Such visions and missions were debated and criticized by the attending staff members in terms of content and formulations, while appropriate amendments were proposed to render them typical.
He also clarified that the writing of the vision and mission looked easy at first glance, but in reality was a complicated task. It required knowledge of the institution's status and role in society, technical knowledge of the correct wording, and consistence with the vision of the parent institution.
In the same context, the professor reviewed the properties and ways to formulate the phrases of the institution's values and objectives emanating from the vision, mission and reality of the environment in which the institution was situated.
The lecture was concluded with a discussion between the lecturer and the audience about some aspects of the subject. Such aspects included work to update the vision and mission of the college in line with those of the university, and formulation of visions, missions, values and objectives of the college's departments. They also involved benefitting from experiences of similar institutions and colleges, and understanding the significance of the inclusion of stakeholders (including the College's students) in writing the vision and mission of the College. This should be on condition that the departments would cooperate with the committee consisting of specialized experts at the college.
