The College of Public Health and Health Informatics held a lecture on Monday 27/12/1438H - 18/9/2017 under the title "Analyzing the College's Experience in Training Medical Interns"The Training Experience of the FPHHIs: Analysis of The First Quarter"presented by Dr Ahmed Abdullah Othman, Vice-Dean for Hospital Affairs and assistant professor of community medicine at the Department of Health Education and Promotion at the College of Public Health and Health Informatics at the Umm al-Qura University. The purpose was to assess the college's first experience in training the first batch of graduates with the goal of continuous improvement. The show was attended by heads of departments and many of the college's teaching members
His excellency Dr Ahmed Othman made a short introduction about the importance of training and how it was mentioned in the Holy Quran. He also made an analysis based on three pillars; structure, coordinates and outputs. He also reviewed the structure of training at the college. He explained that the Vice-Dean for Hospital Affairs includes a training committee and a training unit. The training unit, in addition to the Vice-Dean, includes a number of teaching members from the boys and girls premises as representatives of the four departments.
His Excellency Dr Ahmed Othman reviewed the number of graduates, who started training in Shawwal of last year. He put the number at 176 graduates, including 119 males and 57 females from the college's four departments. He also gave detailed statistics about the numbers in each department and how they were distributed among training institutions, whose numbers reached to 23 public sector institutions, out of 25 with a total percentage of 92%. of the target.
The last two years saw the formation of the committee and unit of training and writing organizations, the formation and publication of the training booklet, the distribution of male and female students among these institutions and holding awareness meetings for them.
As for the training outcomes in the first quarter of the internship, students have been surveyed about the positive aspects and obstacles. The most important positive aspects were: Students enjoyed the training with the help of qualified field supervisors. Students were satisfied about the training plan carried out by the Deanship as well as the diversity of the training facilities, which enhance their acquisition of new experiences. The training plan was suitable for its scientific content, which aims to serve patients and the community with a view to promoting health.
As for the aspects that need improvement, the following was mentioned: Some training facilities drew the students into the training without initial preparation. The students also highlighted the need to medical terms and further details about chronic diseases.
At the conclusion of the lecture, attendees discussed some issues related to the subject, including: Showing appreciation to the Hospitals Deanship at the college and the team that designed the internship for their strenuous efforts and follow-up of this important period for students and the college. Attention has been drawn that the inefficiency of some supervisors in the training institutions has led to their non-cooperation and criticism of the training content needed to the students. It is also needed to prepare the students before the internship to make them ready to accept the natural difference between the theoretical study and training inside the college and the practical application in reality and adaptation to this situation. It is also needed to review the goal of the training during the internship; is it for getting accustomed to the future work environment, to acquire new skills or perform realistic practical missions and designing the training accordingly. It is also needed to draw attention to the importance of the diversity of the training courses during the internship with a view to filling the gap between levels and different situations, whether helpful or unhelpful, that might encounter the students during the training. It is also needed to draw attention to the importance of building relations and partnerships with training institutions in the public and private sectors and forging cordial connections that help a smooth implementation of the internship and solving problems as well as drawing the vision, mission and goals of the internship, mechanisms of implementation and reviewing the implementation forms in addition to making use of the cumulative experience in improving the performance in the future by holding workshops and meeting to this end.
