Overall responsibility
Provide guidance and advice to students regarding all aspects of university life.
Membership
Must be approved by the Department Council

Terms of reference
The functions of the Academic Advising Committee are to:
  • Help the students adjust to the university life by taking part in the orientation week organized by the university.
  • Prepare and distribute academic counselling handbooks to students at the beginning of each academic term and to provide them with an electronic copy on the department’s website.
  • Distribute the students among the academic advisors equally at the beginning of the academic year.
  • Provide training programs in academic advising to faculty members.
  • Prepare a portfolio for each student that contains information and data about the student, his/her chosen track, hobbies, academic achievements, and educational and social challenges and problems.
  • Make sure that faculty members provide the students with detailed syllabi that give a summary of the course, its objectives, a timeline of the contents, the methods of assessment and their expected dates, and the grade distribution from the first class of the course.
  • Make sure that the students are aware of the faculty members’ office hours to meet and discuss their plans and progress.
  • Encourage faculty members to communicate with students using official channels of communication.
  • Continuously keep track of the students’ performances at all levels and courses to provide them with the guidance and support they need based on their academic statuses.
  • Help enhance the academic performance of outstanding students and to guide them to opportunities that would improve their skills and show their creative talents.
  • Follow up on the students’ results in periodic tests to help guide those who need assistance by early detecting struggling students and those of urgent need of help.
  • Prepare students of special needs by making sure they have access to the facilities they need and help them in every way possible.
  • Prepare the students for the academic accreditation committee’s visit by encouraging them to effectively participate in the various committees in the department and increasing their awareness of the importance of their roles to achieve the academic accreditation.
  • Highlight the mutual relationships between the faculty members and their students.
  • Prepare periodic reports that illustrate the academic problems that may face the students in the program.
  • Prepare reports that present suggested solutions to the academic problems and to make sure those solutions are carried out.
  • Make sure the students are actively engaged in solving the academic problems they are facing.
  • Present the findings regarding the problems the students are facing and the suggested solutions to the head of the department in a monthly report to be presented to and discussed by the department’s council.
  • Form subcommittees of the Academic Advising Committee, whose job is to make sure that the various tasks and roles of the Academic Advising Committee are fulfilled.
