The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology is considered to be one of the first basic medical departments that were established in the College of Medicine. It was gradually developed through updating practical and theoretical methods of teaching according to the demands of the graduates from the College of Medicine and other medical colleges. The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology offers distinguished basic and clinical educational services for the students at the College of Medicine, Umm Al-Qura University. This is achieved through raing the level of medical education, clinical training and scientific research. Moreover, the Department contributes to community service by spreading health awareness which is evident in awareness seminars and educational lectures.

Pharmacology is known to be the science of studying pharmaceuticals and their effect on the vital organs. It helps students comprehend the way pharmaceuticals work according to their variety, effects on cell receptors and applications in the pharmaceutical dynamism, contradiction, pharmacokinetics and side effects.

The subject of Pharmacology is specialized in the study of the various therapeutic effects, indications and toxicity of pharmaceuticals. It also studies the different pharmaceutical interactions with both pharmaceuticals and foods. On the other hand, Toxicology is specialized in the study of the harmful impact of the various chemicals including pharmaceuticals and the way they cause toxicity. It also studies toxicity symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
