Overview:
The Department of Operating Systems was built in a way that aimed to achieve the objectives of the Vice-Deanship’s operational plan. It comprises three sections that operate integrally to implement the missions assigned to the Department in coordination with the rest of the Vice-Deanship’s departments. Moreover, it is concerned with the management, control and policy development of storage processes. It also builds, develops and manages all cloud, virtualization and e-mail services for all UQU affiliates. In addition, the Department secures the requirements for the work of its sections, and seeks constant follow-up of work and evaluation of its employees’ performance. The Department comprises the following sections:
Storage and Systems Section:
The section provides the following services:
- Managing, monitoring and updating storage servers at UQU centers.
- Granting, and determining policies of, storage capacities to various UQU bodies.
- Developing a policy proposal for the backup process.
- Following-up the backup process and coordinating with the various departments to ensure backup quality.
- Coordinating with suppliers to support and solve storage server problems upon occurrence.
- Following-up with new technology in order to improve the performance of existing storage units or the evolution thereof to newer systems.
- Managing, monitoring and updating the work of various system servers (Windows Linux and the like).
- Supervising network servers (DHCP and DSN).
- Following-up the search, renewal and distribution of all the licenses of supporting software and systems.
- SSO assistance.
- Managing computer terminals while accessing the secure UQU network.
- Processing backups of configuration files for different systems and servers to be used in disaster recovery situations.
- Developing plans for data recovery in case of disasters, God forbid!
- Providing periodic reports on the section’s performance or any difficulties and problems that need urgent intervention.
Cloud and Virtualization Section:
The section provides the following services:
- Managing resources for UQU and cloud services related to the provision of infrastructure resources.
- Following-up cloud service providers with respect to technical support or update and development.
- Building new cloud services provided by UQU to its beneficiaries.
- Coordinating with other departments in the Deanship so as to provide distinctive and effective cloud services.
- Installing virtualization for the various e-service servers.
- Renewing licenses for the use of virtualization systems (VM Ware, NEC VDI).
- Supporting and maintaining virtualization systems in case of problems, if any.
- Managing, and providing technical support for, the work at the various UQU labs (NEC, ThinkLine).
- Providing periodic reports on the section’s performance or any difficulties and problems that need urgent intervention.
- Participating in the development of cloud utilization and virtualization plans.
- Implementing cloud utilization and virtualization plans.
- Evaluating cloud utilization and virtualization plans.
- Providing customized cloud services according to the policies used.
- Enabling broad access to the network according to usage and security policies.
- Compiling existing resources to ensure flexibility and speed in the delivery of virtual services.
- Evaluating the Virtual Service Measurement service to ensure that infrastructure resources, platforms and applications are well used.
E-Mail Section:
The section provides the following services:
- Supervising and updating UQU servers and e-mail systems related to staff and students.
- Managing (Active Directory) system for the data of user names and passwords.
- Suggesting user name and password format policies.
- Following up the main e-mail server (Mail Exchange).
- Providing technical support for creating or changing e-mail access information.
- Supervising the backup and archiving of e-mail content.
- Providing periodic reports on the section’s performance or any difficulties and problems that need urgent intervention.
