The Department of English Launches a Number of Research Groups

The Department of English Launches a Number of Research Groups

The Department of English is pleased to announce the launch of seven research groups. Three of these groups are based on the department’s main disciplines (Linguistics, Literary Studies and Translation Studies) and their aim is to continue research in the department’s existing areas of interest, while also broadening the scope of its research by introducing new ideas within these disciplines.

The group Computer Corpus Research on Language aims to establish the field as a new area of interest in the department. A fast-growing field which is useful to the department’s different disciplines as it aims to engage with the application of corpus techniques in any type of research.

The three remaining research groups aim to focus on research areas of local priority:

In response to the Saudi Vision 2030 that aspires to welcome more pilgrims, Umm Al-Qura University has identified Hajj and Umrah studies as an area of responsibility given its unique geographical location at the heart of the holy city of Makkah. The university has proposed ‘enriching the pilgrims’ experience’ as one of its research priorities and has included art, language and literature among the contributing disciplines. To that end, the department recognizes the importance of conducting Hajj and Umrah research through its different disciplines, and has thus established the Hajj and Umrah research group.

Considering the university’s unique geographical location in the land of the two holy mosques and at the heart of the Arab and Muslim world, the department also recognises its role in conducting research on Islam and the Middle East, and has for that purpose established the Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies group.

The department has established the Theatre, Film and Culture research group to work towards the 2030 Vision of celebrating national identity and supporting the Saudi National Culture Strategy, and to invest in the locally emerging research priorities that involve Saudi cultural studies.

We believe that these research groups are strategically important for our department as they aim to bring together faculty members who share similar interests for the purpose of encouraging academic research, promoting collaboration, developing projects, sharing expertise and strengthening the quality of research on a departmental and institutional level.

The Institute Holds a Training Course Entitled: “Introducing and Benefiting from Patents”

As part of the training courses and development lectures held during the first semester of the academic year 1443 A.H., the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research at Umm Al-Qura University held a training course on Wednesday, 14 Rabi` Al-Awwal 1443 A.H. The course took place in the research tent at the institute's headquarters in Al-Aziziyah and was entitled: “Introducing and Benefiting from Patents”.

At the beginning of the session, the trainer spoke about patents and their importance in supporting the knowledge economy, progress and prosperity, both scientifically and practically. He then introduced patents and explained the difference between them and innovations and other proprietary rights, such as copyrights, trademarks, industrial models, etc.

Within the same vein, the trainer underscored the importance of legal knowledge regarding how to maintain rights, whether for innovations, patents, or authorships, so that the efforts of the researcher are recognized and their rights are not attributed to others. “Patents are mostly in applied research that yield products and their registration contribute to protection against commercial exploitation of the invention,” he expounded.

Moreover, he noted that a patent is a property document issued by a governmental body and is inheritable and transferable, within a limited period of time, to ensure that the patent and product are protected from remanufacturing and sale.

At the end of the course session, the trainer answered the questions posed by the participants. Finally, the Dean of the College honored and appreciated the trainer for his outstanding course and various benefits it included.

The Institute of Consulting Research and Studies Signs a Number of Consulting Contracts with the Princess Seetah Bint Abdulaziz Award

The Institute of Consulting Research and Studies Signs a Number of Consulting Contracts with the Princess Seetah Bint Abdulaziz Award

Umm Al-Qura University, represented by the Institute of Consulting Research and Studies, concluded a number of consulting contracts with the Princess Seetah Bint Abdulaziz Award for Social Excellence, a group of national companies, and the Holy Capital Police. The aim of the contracts is to activate the Princess Seetah Center for Vocational and Social Rehabilitation at Umm Al-Qura University. This event was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Award and member of the Board of Trustees, His Highness Prince Saud bin Fahd bin Saud Al-Kabeer, and a member of the Board of Trustees, His Highness Prince Salman bin Muhammad Al Saud, in the Prince Sultan Grand Hall, Al Faisaliah Hotel, in Riyadh, on Tuesday.

As a whole, these contracts aim to provide a set of advisory and professional development services that qualify students for the labor market and end with employment for young men and women graduates of high school and universities. Families receiving social security, people with disabilities, orphans and families of martyrs of duty will be targeted in the first place. This is with the aim of social and professional empowerment of families and individuals in need.

It is worth noting that the tripartite contracts come in solidarity between the university and the institute, in partnership with various groups: the Warkan Hotel Chain, Abdul Samad Al-Qurashi Company, Nesma Holding Company, Abdul-Ghani Company of the Ancient House of Gold and Jewelry, Al-Faisaliah Hotel, and the Holy Capital Police.

The Dean of the Institute of Consulting Research and Studies at Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Muhammad bin Naif Al-Sharif, stressed that these contracts come in response to the needs of the private sector; about 545 job contracts will be provided. These agreements also include providing advisory solutions, through three analytical research studies, to the social problems arising from unemployment.

In turn, the Secretary General of the Princess Seetah Bint Abdulaziz Award for Excellence in Social Work, Prof. Fahd bin Hamad Al-Maghlouth, explained that these contracts are intended to achieve a number of objectives of the Princess Seetah bint Abdulaziz Center for Vocational and Social Rehabilitation at Umm Al-Qura University which are compatible with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. Moreover, the contracts aim to achieve the objectives of the Human Capabilities Development Program launched by His Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, may Allah safeguard him, to develop human capital, in line with the needs of the labor market. They also aim at creating new job opportunities that are aligned with the skills and career enablers of young men and women. The contracts further develop their creative and analytical skills and localize them local jobs, in partnership with the public, private and non-profit sectors.

In this regard, the Vice Dean of Umm Al-Qura University for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Ali bin Muhammad Al-Sha`iri remarked: "These contracts come as a result of the advisory contract that was signed, after a consultative study, to establish the Princess Seetah Bint Abdulaziz Center for Vocational and Social Rehabilitation at Umm Al-Qura University, under the generous sponsorship of the Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Governor of Makkah Region, His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al-Faisal. This contributes to the localization of jobs in the Makkah region in the hands of skilled and qualified Saudis for these special training and qualification programs, according to the needs of the region."

In turn, the General Supervisor of the Department of Volunteer Work and Social Responsibility at Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Sumayyah Sharaf, reviewed the executive and operational role played by the university towards the professional and social issues of the surrounding community. She explained the importance of the contribution of the concluded consulting contracts to the localization of jobs in the industry, tourism, management, marketing and other sectors.

At 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, a presentation on the Aesthetics of Mathematics was made by the students of the Department of Mathematics, under the supervision of Dr. Howaida Al-Faran. The meeting was attended by the faculty members of the department and a number of its female students.

The presentation included posing a question that sums up the main topic of the talk, which is: where does the aesthetics of mathematics lie; in its equations or in the mind of someone who understands it? Various details of mathematics, its aesthetics and its attractiveness were then enumerated. One of the most important reasons for the beauty of mathematics is that it serves scientific progress in all fields. Michael Attia spoke about these features and said: "What fascinates me about mathematics is the interaction between its different branches, its unexpected links, and its surprises."

The attendees interacted with the interesting information presented at the meeting; this increased their confidence in choosing the right major for study and their admiration for being mathematicians.
