The Department of Mathematics at Jamoum University College was established simultaneously with the inception of Makkah Teachers' College back in 1396 A.H., when it was called the Intermediate College. It was the biggest department of the college and was the main academic institution graduating highly qualified and competent mathematics teachers for general education, especially at the primary educational level.
The Department of Mathematics was initially established as a mathematics lab for the primary educational level to train mathematics teachers use and apply the necessary educational methods and aids in teaching, in addition to training them on the unavailable educational aids, which help in demonstration and application inside classrooms at different educational levels.
At the inception of the college, the department awarded a diploma degree in mathematics for teachers of the primary educational levels, and the period of study was two academic years. Then, in 1400 A.H., marking the inauguration of the Center of Science and Mathematics, the department awarded a diploma degree from the Center of Science and Mathematics, for the mathematics majors at the center with the aim of graduating skilled mathematics teachers for the intermediate educational levels.
In 1409 A.H., the department started offering its bachelor's program. The period of study was extended to four years, during which the student studied an intensive mathematics curriculum to earn a bachelor of Mathematics degree (B.Math).
In 1422 A.H., the mathematics academic stream was introduced. The period of study was four years, after which the student was awarded a B.Math, qualifying them to teach at the intermediate and secondary educational levels. This was in parallel with the bachelor's program for primary education.
In 1428 A.H., Makkah Teachers' College was annexed to the UQU in Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
In 1430 A.H., the change of the name of the "Makkah Teachers' College" to "Jumoum University College" was approved.
In 1433 A.H., the Mathematics academic program was introduced and the duration of study was four years, after which the student was awarded a B.Math.
In 1433 A.H., the study plan at the department was changed to be more in line with the mission of the College of Applied Sciences. The study plan at the department now aims to graduate highly qualified mathematicians who use logical thinking skills to address scientific issues. It also aims to qualify its graduates to pursue a career in scientific research and work in the educational and banking sectors.
