Procedures for Establishing a Research Chair
The establishment of a scientific chair in the Deanship of Scientific Research is subject to the following procedures:
- The academic staff member who has a record of achievement in the specialization of the research chair submits a proposal to the Deanship of Scientific Research via the e-portal. The academic staff member should enclose the templates prepared for this and two proposed research projects.
- The submitted proposal is then checked by the Deanship of Scientific Research, represented by the Vice Deanship of Research Chairs, to ensure that it is free of plagiarism and that all requirements have been fulfilled. The deanship is then entitled to send the proposal to referees, if needed.
- The scientific chair proposal will be initially submitted to the Supervisory Committee. If approved, the applicant will be asked to submit a detailed presentation about the chair proposal before the committee. The presentation should include the following:
- The vision, mission, and objectives of the chair, and its importance to the university, the community and the funding party (sponsor), as well as its importance to the major according to the templates prepared in this regard.
- A comprehensive description of the nature of the chair, its duration, type, name, and the planned research program.
- The source or sources expected to fund the chair.
- The administrative, technical, scientific, and lab capacities geared to accommodate the activities of the research chair.
- At least two research proposals.
- A detailed estimated budget of the chair, showing the scheduled revenues, operation expenses, and the expected necessary equipment.
- In the case the Supervisory Committee approves the detailed offer and there is a chair funding party, and His Excellency the President of the University has approved its minute, the issue shall be submitted to the University Council, including the funding party's letter of willingness to finance.
- In the case of the Supervisory Committee approving the offer but an absence of a funding party, the application is saved until a funding party is available for the chair proposal.
- In the case of more than one chair proposal in the same field, the academic staff member shall submit a letter of approval requesting his presentation to an external party through the electronic portal of the Deanship of Scientific Research.
- The academic staff member shall not be entitled to submit his offer to external parties without the written approval of the Deanship of Scientific Research or the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for the Research Chairs.
- It is permissible to establish, supervise or manage research chairs outside the university, whether inside or outside the Saudi Kingdom, taking into account the achievement of the objectives of the university and the kingdom, and considering the regulations set by the Supervisory Committee.
