King Abdullah International Gardens

Assistant Professor of Molecular Plant Taxonomy and Botanical Diversity

Botanical gardens offer visitors a wide range of plants from different regions of the world which have been cultivated in conditions similar to their natural environment. Details are also given about the plants on signs providing information on their scientific names, families, original habitats, and medicinal importance.

Botanical gardens play a great role in preserving natural diversity and represent a suitable scientific environment for researchers, helping them to establish studies and various applied projects.

The Saudi 2030 Vision aims at preserving the environment and natural resources, since it constitutes a national wealth that must be taken care of. Consequently, the King Abdullah International Gardens project was built in the west of the city of Riyadh, on an area of 2,100 million km2. These gardens were designed to present to the visitors the natural changes in plant life as a result of the climatic changes that the earth has undergone during the different environmental ages, from the Devonian era through the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, which have been proven by scientific facts and the "Fossils Flora".

In this project, plant shapes have also been reconstructed, showing the plants in the Arabian Peninsula over the last 3.5 million years, and forms of rare flowers and plants that colonized the earth over nearly the last 65 million years are presented, thus providing an effective and applied environment for establishing scientific facts and concepts that are difficult to absorb in classrooms and study halls. The gardens also provide an entertaining outing for families.

This project represents a national wealth for future generations. We ask Allah to grant every success and help to those in charge of the King Abdullah International Gardens.
