Being aware of the fact that Islam encourages philanthropy, and driven by the love for volunteering, the Voluntary Work Unit at the College of Computing in Al-Qunfudhah accomplished many great achievements within one academic year, which are clear in its numerous educational and community activities. Its lauded efforts included building an identity for the Voluntary Unit, designing its logo, and creating an introductory webpage for the unit as well as linking it to the college’s website. The unit also keenly signed agreements and partnerships with entities within Al-Qunfudhah to develop the implementation of volunteer work.

Moreover, the unit has successfully held courses and activated international events, including (training courses for the employees of the Sumuw Association for the Memorization of the Holy Quran, a course entitled: “How to Choose the Right Laptop to Meet Your Needs”, a course for mothers on how to access the “My School [Madrasati]” platform, the 90th Saudi National Day, the International Volunteer Day, and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities).

The unit also held two competitions, entitled: '“We Are All Responsible”, and “Why should I volunteer?” The two competitions yielded great results as mirrored in the testimonies of the UQU affiliates and students about volunteer work, which include the following:

  • We volunteer because Allah (Exalted be He) has commanded and urged us to do so in His Noble Book. The Quran urges Muslims to volunteer; Allah (Exalted be He) says (what means): “And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah, of everything you do, is Seeing.” [Quran 2:110]. Dhu Al-Qarnain volunteered to build the dam, Moses (peace be upon him) watered the sheep (flocks) for the two women, Al-Khadhir and Musa (peace be upon them) volunteered to build the wall (for the orphans), and many other examples of volunteering are mentioned in the Noble Quran (Dr. Khalid Al-Marhabi).
  • Volunteering is one of the most important good deeds encouraged by Islam and our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Voluntary work is a social phenomenon that fosters interdependence, harmony and brotherhood among the members of the society. Allah (Exalted be He) says (what means): “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression” [Quran 5:2], (Ali Al-Sheikhi).
  • Volunteering is a practice that requires a culture and an awareness of what it offers us and others, because we volunteer for our own good. It is a result of the virtue of generosity, and is considered sublime and beautiful work. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) spoke the truth when he said: “The people most beloved to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people.” (Ibrahim Belqassim)
  • “Volunteering is... a way of life.” It refers to the lauded unpaid efforts exerted by a person for the benefit of his society (Amal Al-Shihabi).

The unit concluded this distinguished academic year by honoring its affiliates, distributing certificates of appreciation and motivational shields to urge them to embody creativity in the unit's work and charitable work in general.

Last but not least, with great pride and sincere appreciation, the administration of the College of Computing in Al-Qunfudhah is pleased to extend its sincere gratitude and appreciation to His Excellency Dr. Khalid Al-Marhabi, Former Supervisor of the Voluntary Work Unit at the College, for his lauded achievements during his tenure.
