Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Yasin bin Abdullah Al-Zubaidi, the Dean of Al-Qunfudhah University College, the Arabic Language Department organized a seminar entitled "The Linguistic Lesson from Philology to Linguistics." The seminar was held on Monday 29 Jumada Al-Awwal, 1440 A.H., corresponding to 4 February 2019, in the Al-Qunfudhah University College Theater. Dr. Ali Al-Shahri gave a lecture on "Philology: History and Functions," while Prof. Nu`man Buqrah gave a lecture on "Linguistics: Schools and Functions."
The Scientific Committee was chaired by Prof. Lutfi Dabish from the Arabic Language Department. At the opening of the session, he stated the importance of the subject of study because it is related to the teaching of the Arabic language at the university. He pointed out the need for the learner to learn the science of "philology" and "linguistics" at the same time, as both of them represent a cognitive mechanism that seeks to represent the Arabic language in terms of its establishment and development, as well as in terms of its treatment of ancient and contemporary issues.
The first lecturer, Prof. Ali Al-Shahri, the Head of the Arabic Language Department, reviewed the topic of "Philology," pointing out the importance of this field of knowledge in addressing the problems of the Arabic language and understanding it through different historical stages. Philology tries to reveal the secrets of the Arabic language and teach the secret of its development, as it includes the studies that are concerned with the development of languages, the significance of words, and the development of its structure. It is a mechanism of knowledge concerned with assessing languages and comparing them with each other as well as explaining their old texts
He pointed out that the aim of the study of "philology" or "linguistics" is to teach the Arabic language at the university. He stressed that the colloquial language poses no risk to the Arabic language. However, it is feared that the colloquial language may gradually replace the classical Arabic language.
The second lecturer, Prof. Nu`man Buqrah of the Department of Arabic Language, divided his lecture into three elements: first, the history of linguistics; second, the methods of linguistic analysis; and third, the use of linguistics in linguistic and literary studies. He discussed the areas of new and promising linguistics, namely: Corpus Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, and Forensic Linguistics. He pointed out that linguistics does not differentiate between languages, as there is no preference for one language over another, and there are no fixed standards in all schools of linguistic research.
After the lectures, the Chairman of the Committee opened the door for discussion, and many questions were answered and analyzed by the two lecturers.
The session was concluded with a presentation of the program of seminars on the Arabic Language Department in the coming weeks and until the end of the current semester.
