In 1417, the introducing of the Medical Parasitology Department was approved. The Department is affiliated to the Medicine and Medical Sciences College. The Umm Al Qura University Medical Parasitology Department is one of the basic modern sciences departments which have recently been initiated in the Kingdom’s medical colleges. Those specialized in that field got intrigued by that science in particular due to the Kingdom’s geographical nature which is characterized with the hot, dry climate, heights and depressions and many valleys and swamps all over. This renders it a thriving habitat for spreading the equatorial diseases. For example, diseases such as malaria, leishmania and bilharziasis are widely spread as all the factors helping the disease strongly establish itself exist: cause, transmitter and carrier.
The Department teaches the parasitology curriculum for the Medicine College Medicine and Surgery Program, as well as taking part in teaching the diagnostic Parasitology course for the Applied Medical Sciences College laboratory Medicine Program. The Department also gives some lectures on the parasitic diseases in many other medical specialties in the health colleges at the University.
Further, through the researches it does the Department hopes that it will have an affective role in serving the University. And, it hopes that it will become, in the not too distant future, one of the scientific Mecca that benefits the society. It also seeks to be well-prepared for taking samples from the private and public hospitals and clinics in order to establish a diagnostic reference serving all Makkah’s medical facilities, especially during Hajj and Umrah seasons.
