Abstract

This research examines in detail the levels of poets’ inspiration to engaging prophecy’s concept in their poetries with applying this idea on poems of several Saudi modern poets. Also, this study argues the poets’ approaches to involving prophecy label in their poetries or using intertextuality with the prophets’ traditions and personalities pertaining to their positions and quotations. This project discusses mainly three topics: a) the equivocation between poetry and prophecy in contemporary and old literature and its limitations and rationales; b) utilizing prophecy label amongst Saudi poets; and c) the techniques of intertextuality between Saudi poetries and prophets’ texts. The methodology of this study uses a combined approach which involves a historical overview of this topic with a pragmatic-cognitive approach, ending with evaluation and analysis of the data. The main findings of this study are as follows:
1- The equivocation between poetry and prophecy has happened since the early Islamic era, due to intermingling Islamic culture with other cultures and emergence of new doctrines and sects.
2- Poets are usually using prophecy label and prophets’ entities and characteristics in their literature for aesthetic appealing and declaring and purifying themselves from being fallible.
3- Utilizing prophecy label and intertextuality with prophets’ texts and entities in poetry styles are acceptable, providing that they are being used for aesthetic and glorification purposes.
