Unit Description

This unit is dedicated to developing and enhancing productive English language skills (speaking and writing) to equip students with the essential communication skills required to achieve their academic and professional aspirations.
To achieve this goal, the unit performs several key functions, including:

  • Developing high-quality educational curricula tailored specifically to meet the needs and interests of Umm Al-Qura University students.

  • Contributing to the professional development and performance enhancement of faculty members.

  • Enhancing the learning environment to encourage active and effective English language practice within the classroom.

  • Advancing and refining the assessment process.

To cultivate a learning environment that ignites a passion for effective English communication, unlocking a world of opportunities in both academic and professional domains, thereby contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy and the realization of Saudi Vision 2030.

Objectives

  1. Developing high-quality educational curricula to prepare globally competitive students.

  2. Integrating real-world communication skills, such as public speaking, active discussion, expressing and exchanging opinions, critical thinking, and debate.

  3. Establishing a strong focus on developing English speaking and writing skills.

  4. Offering carefully curated programs designed to:

    • Provide learning topics that align with students' personal interests.

    • Enable the application of acquired skills across various academic and professional domains in the future.

  5. Enhancing faculty performance by:

    • Appointing highly experienced members to the committee.

    • Providing continuous professional development programs to keep faculty abreast of the latest theories and methodologies in teaching productive English language skills.

    • Maintaining continuous communication with faculty members to gather feedback on their experiences and insights, thereby driving the ongoing development of committee programs.

  6. Enriching the educational environment and encouraging effective English communication in the classroom by:

    • Designing interactive programs and tasks that stimulate and engage student interest.

    • Creating collaborative opportunities to enhance peer-to-peer interaction and encourage active classroom use of English.

    • Cultivating a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel confident to actively participate and communicate in English.

  7. Advancing the assessment process by:

    • Developing a comprehensive framework to track student progress and identify areas for growth.

    • Utilizing diverse, systematic assessment methodologies to accommodate varying student needs (e.g., continuous assessment, peer-to-peer assessment, self-assessment, and instructor evaluation).

    • Providing students with continuous, structured feedback to help them monitor their own progress and define their learning goals.
