The Department of Chemistry, in cooperation with the Vice Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, held a seminar entitled: 'Hydrogen is the Future Fuel: Fuel Cells'. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Ali Al-Wajhani at the college theater.
At the beginning of the seminar, His Excellency Dr. Ali explained the importance of Hydrogen as one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuel, due to its small volumetric mass. He added that it is safer than the vapors of gasoline, methane, and natural gas, as it has the highest degree of auto-ignition temperature in air. Furthermore, hydrogen is highly efficient in producing energy (143 million joules/kg).
During the second part of the seminar, His Excellency shed light on the methods of hydrogen gas preparation from different sources, such as oil gases, water, industrial gases, and many other sources. After that, His Excellency touched on different types of fuel cells, their main components, and the basics of how they work, transmitting the chemical energy stored in hydrogen and its components directly into electric energy. In addition, His Excellency clarified several advantages of these cells, such as their high efficiency in producing energy, the easiness and simplicity of their maintenance, their ability to work for a long time, and their being a clean source of energy.
At the end of the seminar, His Excellency answered the questions of the attendees, including the academic staff and the students.
