Arabic Language Department in Al-Qunfudhah Organizes a Seminar Entitled 'From Old to New Arabic Rhetoric'

Under the noble patronage of His Excellency Dr. Yasin bin Abdullah Al-Zubaidi, the Dean of Al-Qunfudhah University College, the Arabic Language Department organized a scientific seminar entitled, 'From Old to New Arabic Rhetoric', on Monday morning, 13 Jumada Al-Thani, 1440 A.H., corresponding to 18 February, 2019 A.C., at the theater of Al-Qunfudhah University College. His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim Abdul-Rahman gave a lecture on old rhetoric, and His Excellency Prof. Abdullah Banaqib talked about new rhetoric. The event was attended by a number of academic staff and students.

The Scientific Committee was chaired by Prof. Sami Sulaiman from the Arabic Language Department. He started the session by mentioning the importance of the topic because of its connection to the fields of rhetorical, critical and linguistic study, in general. He mentioned some of the trials that sought to develop rhetoric in the twentieth century.

In the first lecture, His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim Abdul-Rahman tackled the most important features of rhetoric in the Arabic heritage, starting from the foundation trials by Al-Jahiz and Ibn Al-Mu`taz, and then touching on the efforts exerted by others, such as Abdul-Qahir Al-Jurjani and Al-Zamakhshari. Next, he dealt with the most important theories of rhetoric during this period of time.

In the second lecture, Prof. Abdullah Banaqib tackled the most important trials to renew rhetoric, starting from the trials of Shaykh Muhammad Abduh, Amin Al-Khuli, and Muhammad Abu Musa, and then touching on the most important modern trends, such as stylistics, argumentation, cognitive, audience rhetoric, rhetoric imaging, digital rhetoric, etc. He dealt in detail with one of these trends, which is the argumentative rhetoric.

After the lectures, the chairman of the committee opened the door for discussion, and many questions were answered and analyzed by the two lecturers.
