Department of Mathematics at Al-Leith Organizes an Event on the Occasion of the International Day of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Al-Leith University College, on Monday, 2 Sha`ban 1442 A.H., via the WebEx online platform, held an activity on the occasion of the International Day of Mathematics, which is celebrated every year on 14th of March. The event was attended by a number of academic staff members and students of the department.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Ali Al-Hassani, said that the department makes use of such occasions to upgrade the scientific and knowledge level of the students and hone their talents.

On her part, the Deputy Supervisor of the Department, Dr. Saadiyah Al-Jadaani, referred in her speech to the importance of mathematics in everyday life, and highlighted its leading role in addressing crises, such as the coronavirus pandemic currently affecting the world, through scientific research and publications and the effective contributions provided in this regard. She urged the students to achieve more innovation and excellence in such a manner which will contribute to achieving the objectives and visions of the Saudi Kingdom.

Following this, a member of the academic staff in the department, Dr. Abdul-Hamid Farraj, introduced the International Day of Mathematics. He highlighted the history of its establishment, the celebration of this day throughout the world, and its relationship with the π (Pi) number, tackling the unique algebraic and geometric features of this number.

Next, some interesting exercises were presented, by a member of the academic staff in the department, Dr. Huwaida Al-Farran, including various mathematical questions and puzzles, which were subsequently solved by the students. The important part of the event was devoted to showcasing samples of the students' innovative work to encourage them to achieve more creativity and innovation. Their work focused on various majors of pure and applied mathematics, such as: linear algebra, geometry, real analysis and mechanics, as well as astronomy.

At the end of the event, the Supervisor of the Department extended sincere thanks and appreciation to all the students and honorable attendees, and urged them to interact and participate in all the extracurricular activities.
