The Department was one of the centers affiliating to the College of Shari'a and Islamic Studies of the University of King Abdul-Aziz, Makkah branch. Then it was converted into an independent institute and deanship pursuant to the royal decree No. 7/Y/52127, dated Dhul-Qe'dah 28th 1399H, under the name of Institute of Teaching Arabic Language to Non-Arabs and transformed to the Institute of Teaching Arabic Language for Non-native speakers which included also a department for training instructors.
The Department has two sections for male and female students.
* The department operates on a full scholarship from the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Muslim sons of the nonnative speakers of the Arabic language.
* The scholarship provides the student with the followings: books, housing, treatment, internal transportation, annual travel ticket and affordable food, besides financial reward amounting to Sr. 850 monthly. The married students can make the necessary arrangements to live with their families. As for the students with excellent grade, without a recorded failure, they can carry on their studies in one of the colleges of the university to obtain bachelor degree in one of the following specializations:
- Arabic language and literature.
- Shari'a and Islamic Studies
- Da'wa and Islamic Theology
- They can also join the department of instructors training in the Institute

To design and develop requirements of the programs of teaching Arabic language for nonnative speakers including syllabus, educational materials and measurement tools according to the latest educational methods and learning techniques.
To conduct researches and studies in the field of Arabic language teaching and learning as a foreign language.
To organize courses, forums, conferences and sessions related to the department specialties and programs.
To exchange expertise with the similar departments in and outside the Kingdom.
