    Objectives

    This course explains the concepts of pharmacognosy, which embraces the scientific study of compounds derived from plants, animals, marine and microbes. It also provides basic knowledge relating to several classes of secondary metabolites. The course introduces the therapeutic uses of a number of natural products according to body systems (e.g. GI, endocrine, musculoskeletal and immune systems, skin, eye and inflammation) and discusses key points such as medicinal uses, mechanisms of action, chemical class, side effects, contraindications and herb-drug interaction.

    Objectives

    The course focuses on drugs from natural origins arranged by therapeutic category. It discusses mechanisms of action, chemical class, side effects, herb-drug interactions and medicinal uses. This course aims to provide students with needed skills and working knowledge of natural products available in the pharmaceutical industry and includes natural products for the cardiovascular, respiratory systems, infectious diseases, reproductive and urinary tract disorders, cancer, CNS and psychological disorders, obesity and hair loss.

    Objectives

    This course introduces the major domains of CAM and students will be familiarized with a wide range of alternative medical techniques and their classifications. The course also allows students to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of CAM practices through the study of their theories and principles. It deals with current natural health products that are commonly used to maintain good health, including vitamins, minerals, hormones, herbal remedies, nutraceuticals and probiotics.
