The Museum department was established as per the decision of the university president No. 776/2, dated 9^th of Safar 1420H, based on a recommendation submitted by a number of academics in the university familiar with museum affairs, aiming at restructuring the work, and gathering all the specialist museums of the university in one showcasing venue, to be a nucleus of a comprehensive and scientific museum serving and contributing to achieving a number of objectives.   
The membership of the selected department of museum included some of teachers specialized in different branches of museology. Establishing a proper atmosphere, the department managed to undertake many achievements in light of the moral and material support it has received from the President of the University and its different departments.

Mission:

The department is committed to serve Makkah, Umm Al-Qura University, Science, Knowledge, human, resident, and visitor and to introduce Makkan arts and civilization, besides contributing to serving human heritage to be a torchbearer visited by those coming to the Holy Mosque from every distant pass.

Objectives:

• To serve university students in their study courses and scientific researches through various museum collectibles existing in the museum such as; ancient heritage, animal mummifications, rocks or metals, besides paying attention to heritage symbols related to environment and royal heritage.  
• Disseminating museum culture amongst  the university community and people of Makkah, and building human and habitation to be a torchbearer of science and knowledge, meanwhile visited by those who are coming to the Holy Mosque  from every distant pass.
