In 1417/1418H, the college was inaugurated as a middle college. Among its Departments is home economics and art education Department. The college was granting diploma in teaching for primary stage. In 1422/1423H, the college has become college of education for female teachers with home economics and art education Department changed into home economics education in order to provide female graduates with bachelor degree in Education. In 1430/1431H, family education program was first applied in University College at Al-Lith. The Department is concerned with instructing one of life sciences. It is an applied science involving many sciences focusing on serving the individual, family life and the society. Moreover, it is characterized by integrated specialized scopes that are based on various sciences. The Department includes four main aspects for study, namely:

• Nutrition and Food Science.
• Clothing and fabric.
• Housing and home management.
• Art education. 

The Department Objectives:  

1. Enabling the student to determine the main rules for food and nutrition.
2. The student shall be acquainted with health, mental and psychosocial and social care for family members within the different physiological stages according to scientific standards.
3. Providing students with knowledge, information and skills required to manage the family affairs and decrease consumption as per the scientific bases.
4. Providing students with knowledge, information and skills required to live in a residence for which they shall be responsible in terms of its system and its furniture according to the needs of family members as per the sound scientific standards.
5. Providing students with knowledge, information and skills to select design and make clothes and furnishings as per the modern techniques.
6. Providing students with knowledge, information and skills to plan, implement and assess the advisory programs in family life education aspects.

The Department Mission:

The main mission of the Department is to serve the family and the society in order to achieve development and provide better life for it; enhancing and improving the household environmental conditions and health status; preparing female graduates to fulfill the needs of labor market; developing scientific research skills in order to serve the environment and society; and activating and applying quality standards in education.

Promoting the family and community environment together with activating, integrating all fields of family life education in order to healthily, mentally, psychologically and socially serve the individual with the objective of having a good citizen for himself/herself or for his/her society.
