Overview

The Deanship of Library Affairs was established in 1424 A.H. when the headquarters of the library was built in the University City in Al-Abdiyyah. It was inaugurated in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Abdul-Majeed bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, the Emir of Makkah Region, in 1425 A.H. and was named King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz University Library.

King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Library at Umm Al-Qura University is a scientific, cultural, educational and social institution that aims to collect and develop information sources in various ways (purchases, dedications, exchanges, donations), and organize and restore them in the shortest possible time. It also aims to present these sources to the community of beneficiaries through a combination of traditional services, such as borrowing, references, periodicals, photocopying, and modern services, including ongoing briefings, selective broadcasting of information, and other specialized services. All these services are provided by efficient human cadres who are qualified, scientifically and technically, in the field of library and information science.

The University Library was established in 1388 A.H., unifying the library of the College of Shari`ah and that of the College of Education in one library. In 1391 A.H., the libraries of two colleges (the College of Education and the College of Shari`ah) and the affiliated university library were joined to King Abdul-Aziz University. In 1394 A.H., a new three-story building was constructed and annexed to the University Library at the university headquarters in Al-Aziziyyah.

Objectives

• Providing the sources of human knowledge that serve the different scientific specializations at the university.
• Developing the library systems according to the modern advancements in the field of library services and information.
• Providing information and library services to facilitate research and retrieval methods through publications, bibliographies, directories, indexes, etc.
• Exchanging the university and deanship publications with universities and scientific institutions locally and internationally, and cooperating and coordinating with similar parties.
• Preparing introductory programs to students and academic staff members about the services it offers, and training them on how to use the available sources of information and how they can benefit from its services.
• Offering services to beneficiaries by responding to their inquiries and fulfilling their requests as soon as possible.
• Preparing the suitable atmosphere for studying and research inside the library.

Mission

The mission of the library is an integral part of the university’s mission, which is represented in offering higher scientific and promoting the educational and cultural preparation and development of students to graduate qualified national cadres. The library is the body entrusted with providing research services as well as providing and acquiring programs, tools and materials that complement the educational process.
