Researcher Afnan Salah Mohammed Salaka, a scholar from the UQU College of Applied medical Sciences published a part of its thesis in one of the prominent international scientific journals, The Lancet Neurology (The Lancet Neurology, Vol. 15, No. 6, p538–540 Published online: March 23, 2016). The Lancet Neurology is one of the leading medical journals. The impact factor of the journal is 21.8 and it is first-ranked among 184 journals in the same field. The researcher worked with a team comprising a number of European researchers on examining about 24000 patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. The team discovered that patients who have genetic defect (22q11.2 deletion syndrome) have higher risks of early suffering from Parkinson's disease (under age 45 years) compared with others. It is a very important discovery that may play a role in early treatment of the disease limiting its aggravation. It is worth mentioning that Prof. Afnan is a Ph.D. researcher at the Cardiff University Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences in the United Kingdom.
Commenting on this great achievement, Dr. Ahmed Ashi, Dean of College of Applied Medical Sciences highly appreciated the support provided to the College by His Excellency Dr. Barki bin Matouk Assas, UQU President. He pointed out that the fruits of such support are now reaped through the College's continuing achievements thanks to HE Dr. Assas' support.
