The Saudi Scholarly Society for the Principles of Jurisprudence and Shari`ah Objectives (Usul), which is affiliated to the College of Shari`ah and Islamic Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Shari`ah (Female Section), held a scientific course for female students entitled "Skills of Serving the Verified Text". The course was presented by Prof. Mahmoud Uthman, the academic staff member at the Department of Shari`ah, on Monday 27 Jumada Al-Thani 1440 A.H., at Khawaqir hall.
In this course, his Eminence discussed the meaning of "serving the text". He explained that there are two categories of manuscripts writing. Some manuscripts were written by the author and thus the number of mistakes was very few. Other manuscripts were written by scribes and thus the number of mistakes was great. He discussed how a verifier notifies the reader to keep the text of the author intact, point out the features of the text, explain ambiguous words, verify the text, and document the verified text. He also pointed out the methods of documentation and verification, and the importance of knowing verification methodology for the researcher. He added that the best way of verifying a manuscript is for the verifier to have written it down by hand.
The course was attended by a group of female postgraduate students and a group of female undergraduates, due to the importance of the topics tackled in the course. The attendants' enquiries were duly answered.
At the end of the course, the representative of the society, Dr. Huwaida Al-Lihaibi, thanked his Eminence Sheikh Dr. Mahmoud Uthman for the efforts he exerted in this course.
