Meeting of Clinical Nutrition Advisory Committee

 The Department of Clinical Nutrition at the College of Applied Medical Sciences, Umm Al-Qura University (UQU), organized the Advisory Committee meeting at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, 21st Rajab 1438H (18th April 2017) at the College’s headquarters. The meeting aimed at program development and quality in line with the KSA Vision 2030 in the domain of higher education, and professional specialization achievement. The meeting was attended by Dr. Ahmad bin Muhammad Eshi (Dean of the College), Dr. Muhammad Othman Al-Kurbi (Vice-Dean for Academic Development and Community Service), Dr. Ayman Al-Sayegh (Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs), Dr. Maher Al-Andijani (Vice-Dean for Hospitals Affairs), Dr. Muhammad Abu-Bakr Ba-Salam (Vice-Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research) and Dr. Ali Thabet (Coordinator of the Quality and Academic Accreditation Committee). The meeting was also attended by the Clinical Nutrition Advisory Committee members: Dr. Hassan bin Mazhar Bukhari (Assistant Professor and Head of the Advisory Committee), Dr. Haifaa bint Hussein Hijazi (Associate Professor and Head of the Department), Dr. Islam Ahmad Mahmoud Haidar (Professor at the Department), Dr. Samaa Said As-Suadaa (Associate Professor), Dr. As-Sayed Hamed Ali Bakr (Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Committee), Dr. Siham As-Sayed Al-Qutb Zahran (Assistant Professor), Prof. Nof Falih Al-Khattabi (Lecturer) and Prof. Salma Saad Al Mashi (Teaching Assistant).   
On the other hand, external bodies such as hospitals and health administrations were represented by Prof. Mai bint Saleh Labny (Head of the Clinical Nutrition Department at the Maternity and Children Hospital in Makkah), Prof. Amira bint Muhammad Flimban (Head of the Nutrition Awareness and Education Department at the Health Affairs in Makkah) and Prof. Manal bint Mansour Hemeish (Clinical Nutrition Specialist at Al Noor Specialist Hospital in Makkah).
At the beginning of the meeting, the Dean of the College thanked and praised Allah, the Almighty, and wished peace and blessings to be upon His Prophet (PBUH). He, then, welcomed the committee members and thanked them for their response to the membership invitation addressed to them. He also wished that Allah, the Almighty, would render the work and decisions of the Committee successful, while commending its effective role to serve clinical nutrition according to the global standards. This was followed by a speech by Dr. Haifaa Hijazi, Head of the Department, in which she welcomed the honorable committee members and attendees and commended their effective and leading role at the Department. Afterwards, a presentation was given by Dr. Hassan Bukhari, Head of the Advisory Committee.  
During the meeting, members of the Committee provided advice and assistance in the domains of (courses, training, scientific research, postgraduate studies and future plans). This aimed to the qualification of the program graduates to join the labor market during and after graduation. Moreover, the following topics were addressed: 
1-    Study plans for the proposed master's programs in the Department, and review of the models of the courses that would be taught there to identify the actually taught material, teaching and evaluation methods, as well as comments and suggestions in line with the objectives and needs of the current and future labor market.
2-    The program’s definition file and Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) to be achieved for its graduates, the teaching methods, and the receipt of the Committee members’ views and suggestions in this regard.
3-    Discussing the needs of the local labor market, identifying the deficiencies of graduates in order to contribute to raising and developing professional performance locally and regionally, and being able to compete and excel among peers globally.
4-    The disadvantages of graduates working in clinical nutrition at present.
The recommendations of the meeting were:
1-    Final year students should have a comprehensive test before internship, in order to identify the strength and weakness points of the program graduates. 
2-    More attention should be given to the subjects of “Nutrition Quality and Services in Hospitals” and “Food Safety;” the part of food contracts should be added to the Kitchen Department.
3-    It was proposed that sub-specialties should be done for clinical nutrition postgraduate programs and that attention should be paid to the development of specialized professional diplomas according to the direction of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). 
4-    It was also proposed that a Challenge Case Study in clinical nutrition should be conducted to highlight the studied material; another unified presentation should be given at the end of each internship period to further develop the skills and communication abilities of female students; nutrition guidance should be done through the theoretical and practical subjects and field training.
5-    There should be communication with stakeholders to work on the Clinical Nutrition Program for the Male Students Section, due to the urgent need for males in the domain of clinical nutrition, especially Nutritional Home Care, Evening Nutrition Clinics in hospitals or the Primary Health Center. 
6-    Means should be developed to help connect the Department with its graduates, and benefit from their experiences in developing the program and courses, such as holding periodic meetings or celebrating Graduates' Day.
