Abstract

The current study aimed to identify contemporary global trends in comparative and international education research, specifically in the Comparative Education Review (CER), a journal affiliated with the American Society for Comparative and International Education, regarding topics, fields of study and research, and research methods (methodology, tool(s)). To achieve this goal, a descriptive approach was used, and a content analysis form was designed for all 167 studies published in the journal between 2020 and 2025. The results showed that modern topics in comparative and international education were the most frequently repeated in Comparative Education Review (CER), accounting for 83.83% of the total, while traditional topics in comparative and international education were 16.16%. The results also showed that case studies were the most frequently repeated field of study and research, accounting for 66.64% of the total, followed by international studies, accounting for 11.37%, and field studies, accounting for 10.17%. The results also showed that cross-sectional studies were the least frequently repeated of the four fields, accounting for 5.38%. The results also revealed that the qualitative approach was the most widely used approach (89.22%), followed by the quantitative approach (9.58%), and finally the mixed approach (1.19%). The results also showed that the most widely used research tool was the content analysis tool (79.64%), followed by the interview tool (14.37%), questionnaires (8.38%), and observations (2.99%).
