Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the “We Read to Advance” initiative in order to develop the summarization skills of the students of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Shinas, as well as their attitudes towards it. The study sample consisted of (62) male and female students. In order to achieve the purposes of the study, the researcher has followed a quasi-experimental approach which consisted of two control groups (31) male and female students and an experimental group (31) male and female students. The study used two research tools, the first one is an achievement test in the summarization skill, and the second is a scale of attitudes towards the “We Read to Advance” initiative between the study sample members. The study found statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and the control group in the post-administration of the summarization skills test, in favor of the experimental group. It also revealed statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre- and post-administrations, favoring the post-test. In addition, the results indicated statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group participants’ responses in the pre- and post-administrations of the attitude scale toward the “We Read to Advance” initiative, in favor of the post-administration. In light of its findings, the study recommended conducting further research on the effect of reading comprehension strategies on developing summarization skills of read texts across different educational stages
