On the 30th of Dhul-Hijjah 1429H, the Council of Higher Education issued the decision No. 10/50/1429H approving restructuring of teachers and girls colleges affiliated to Umm Al-Qura University, in implementation of the royal decree no. 10209/MB that stipulated changing the name of college education for girls for preparation of primary schools teachers in Makkah, to be college of education for Girls in Makkah. The college consists of five academic departments including family education department.   

Pursuant to what has been adopted by the Council of Umm Al-Qura University in its 1st session dated 28th of Dhul-Qe'dah 1432H through the decision no. 14 regarding restructuring the university college in Makkah and the college of girls annexed to Umm Al-Qura University, and as per the letter of HE the Minister of Education No. 1199/A dated 7th of JumadaII, 1433H containing the decision of the Council of Higher Education no. 11/69/1433H, in its 69th session dated 20th of RabeiII,1433H approving restructuring of college of teachers and college of girls in the universities to be restructured in accordance with the formula attached to the decision consistent with the University Council decision referred to above.

Pursuant to the approval of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, The prime Minister, the Chairman of the Council of Higher Education -May Allah bless him- via the royal decree no. 25532 dated 22nd of Jumadah I, 1433H, the college of education for Girls with all its departments including family education department was annexed to the faculty of education at Umm Al-Qura University. 

Actually, the trip of providing education for girl has started to help her assuming its responsibility as a wife and a mother. At the beginning, her education was limited to housekeeping particularly cooking and knitting. Then, her education developed to concentrate on developing innovative capabilities of girl and provide her training to use scientific method in thinking and acquiring skills, in a manner that led to changing vocabulary of housekeeping concept to home economics which has become one of the growing sciences in the academic arena.

In view of the impact of the technological progress on the individuals and groups, the family science has become vital part in the scientific and educational curricula, thus necessitating the update of the home economics concept and amending part of its content. The new world classification for this branch of

 Knowledge has become (family science/ family sciences and consumer)  

The family sciences program in the local and international universities includes two tracks; science or education, and then the student will be awarded the degree

- (B.Sc. Home Science)  

- (B.Ed.  Home Science) 

As per the academic requirements, the name for the developed program has been selected based on the following:

  • The directives of the Ministry of Education (family education document)
  • The educational track for family sciences similar in the same way as other universities and colleges.
  • The degree awarded to student: Bachelor of education in (family education and educational training).

 

Mission:

The department is committed to graduate cadres equipped with modern technology means and qualified to work in the field of family sciences of educational and productive nature, so as to become the national core of the pioneering women in the Kingdom. 

 

Objectives:

  • To prepare academically, professionally and administratively successful female teacher, in a manner which qualifies her to teach these courses in the different stages of the public education. 
  • To prepare qualified cadres in the field of food sciences and production, and management of nutritional services in the institutions.
  • To prepare qualified cadres in the sciences related to textile and clothing and the production of clothes for the different age groups.
  • To prepare qualified cadres in the fields related to aesthetic values, dexterity, creativity and production of artifacts.
  • To prepare qualified cadres in the fields of children education, family and social relations and house management, furnishing and beautification.
  • To prepare cadres having skills of productive work to design their own projects.
  • To prepare religiously and morally qualified cadres  in the community
