First: Interior Design Program

Overview:

Interior design is one of the engineering fields linking between the architectural engineering and the functional needs of interior building. Interior design means setting internal system for the structures taking into consideration the outside surroundings. This is meant for providing and meeting the diverse human requirements in terms of the long and short term living conditions and working life with all its fields combined.  Interior design is not limited to internally arranging furniture; however it means a full plan with technical components based upon cross-cutting sciences from human and engineering to technical and technology.

Objective:

The Interior Design Department Creating Program at Um Al-Qura University Designs and Arts College aims at graduating national cadres specialized in the interior design furniture designing fields. Thus, its academics diversified from studying aesthetic and functional theories. It also embraces contemporary trends in the interior designing field “Décor”, and in the furniture designing and manufacturing field; and all that is related to them in terms of the art of dealing with the aesthetic and functional designing for the residential, commercial, administrative, hotel and tourist buildings. Similarly, it studies the type of furniture appropriate for these previously-mentioned buildings, and all that is connected to the wall designs and color employing-as well as tackling the lighting, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

As such, this internal designing brings comfort to persons within their surroundings, and organizes their behavior within all types of buildings. This also provides them with a healthy atmosphere through adequate lighting, healthy ventilation, soothing colors, furniture designing suiting the dimensions of any given building and other technological aspects.

Still, the objectives of the Department is not only restricted to awarding the interior designing bachelor, but also to awarding diploma, Master and PhD degrees.  The objectives also cover other social and environmental aspects.  In other words, through the interior design Department, the Department can create a distinctive production unit preparing the designs of the interior design work and furniture for all Um Al Qura University colleges.  Such unit also supervises and follows up the implementation process by the Department’s academic staff members.  

Among the objectives of the Interior Design Department is establishing a design center serving the society and providing counseling and designs in the interior design and furniture field, and supervised by a select of the academic staff members. Further, the Department can present social and environmental services such as creating a Department concerned with free studies in the interior design and furniture specialties- and admitting university graduates from all specialties.

By the same token, the University, through the Interior Design Department, can participate in the environmental activities such as planning and beautifying public squares in the Kingdom’s cities. It can also take part in providing all the technical counseling in the interior design field for all the projects implemented in the Kingdom.  

Vision:

The Department targets the qualifying of specialized national cadres in the interior design and furniture design fields; therefore, its academics diversify from studying the aesthetic theories and studying the functional theories. 

Mission:

The Department aims at qualifying an interior designer capable of keeping abreast with the world of designing in terms of innovation and technology, and nurturing the visual communication culture in the society. It is also intended to encourage scientific research and continuing education and cope with all the developments in the field of specialty.

Why the Program was initiated or developed:

  1. Given the Ministry of Education endeavors to develop education, and update the university specialties and programs, the need arose for developing and expanding the interior design Department of the art education department in the education college as it receives many admission applications. And, due to the huge number of students desiring to apply for it, it was separated as a specialized department “Interior Design Department”, in a specialized college “Designs and Arts College”.
  2. The labor market is in constant need of for specialized graduates in the interior design field due to the steady mobility in real estate market, and the scarcity of specialists in that field.
  3. The Kingdom witnesses ever-growing, fast development in real estate market, especially, the hotel, tourism, commercial, administrative and residential buildings due to the ongoing expansion of the Two Holy Mosques. This increases the need for interior design specialty in all the buildings constructed.
  4. The Kingdom seeks national interior design graduates able to meet the Kingdom’s need for interior and furniture designers in the governmental and private sectors due to its scarcity.
  5. The interior design graduates and their parents seek to initiate interior design postgraduate studies Department enabling them to obtain the Master and PhD degrees in that specialty.
  6. There has been a need for creating a design center serving the society and providing the technical counseling in the field of specialty for all the projects implemented by the Kingdom through the Interior Design Department, and the supervision of the Department academic staff members.  Also, the Department can create production unit serving the University, and performing the interior designs and furniture designing for all Um Al Qura University colleges.

Expected Labor Market Need:

Interior design is one of the key specialties for the Saudi society for the labor market need to such a specialty in all the hotel, tourist, and administrative, commercial and residential buildings.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia badly needs such a specialty as it witnesses fast, ever-growing development in the construction field, especially the hotel, tourism and commercial buildings, and markets and big malls. Therefore, there is an ongoing need for renovating the interior designing and furniture of these buildings. Further, the Holy Mosques expansion increases the process of building and renovation, and the need for the interior design field.

The labor market constantly needs national specialized interior design graduates, able to meet the Kingdom’s need in terms of interior and furniture designers in the governmental and private sectors.

Bodies benefiting from the Interior Design Graduates:

Specializing in the interior design field creates job opportunities for our graduates. And, it replaces the foreign labor force by the Saudi working hand in that field, in the governmental and private sectors.

The Potential outcomes of the Program:

The Program works on improving  knowledge, cognitive skills, social skills, responsibility shouldering, communication and information technology skills, numerical skills, psychological and dynamic skills.

To help achieve these objectives, the students will gain these experiences through the following:

  • Practicing art and designing in the studio.
  • Designing process: starting from the client and until the production process as a whole; cooperative, collective and individual work stages.
  • Skills related to the basic skills of graphic designing.
  • Advanced computer laboratories
  • Model program applications in that field.
  • Commercial project initiatives
  • Promotion strategies.

The Program applies an approach based upon the following:

  • The importance of learning the art and designing, especially in the modern trade environment.
  • Future importance for digital techniques within the interior design field.
  • Advantages of presenting and preparing new studies based upon developed programs.
  • Providing well-trained work force meeting the needs of such industry, and possessing academic level competing the work key players.

Program Consistency with the University’s Vision:

Such program is closely linked to the University’s vision due to the services it provides for society and meeting the labor market needs. Still, labor market increasingly demand the interior design specialty graduates as the Kingdom sees ever-growing boom in investments. And, such specialty is scarce in the labor market.
