The Department of Chemistry at the College of Applied Sciences at Umm Al-Qura University is characterized by a large number of faculty members who have the research capacity and creative energy to continue their distinguished research in various fields of chemistry to serve the community. The most important of these fields are:
Researchers in this field are identifying the best and most environmentally friendly and healthy ways to prepare new organic compounds with promising applications. They also study their composition, their different interactions and their important properties, such as spectral properties and the study of distinct applications in various industrial and medical fields. They also conduct research and studies to propose the mechanics of different reactions, and conduct important physical studies on many interactions. There is no doubt that this field of research is the largest and most intersecting with all other fields in modern chemistry.
Research in this field deals with studies in the field of advanced electrochemistry and its applications in electrochemical catalysis on modified electrodes, the development of fuel cells as a renewable energy source, and the study of corrosion and prevention of metal corrosion. In addition, researchers conduct advanced studies in the kinetics of chemical reactions, surface chemistry and homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis chemistry, and the use of nanotechnology in various applications of physical chemistry. Researchers pay special attention to advanced theoretical studies (quantum chemistry and computational chemistry) for their important role in predicting and interpreting many chemical processes and properties and linking them to applied results.
Researchers in this field are interested in designing and preparing metallic and organometallic compounds and characterizing them with the latest analytical and spectral methods. They are also interested in studying their important industrial applications in nanotechnology, materials science and homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, they study their biological activity and therapeutic applications in the field of medicines, especially their activity as anti-carcinogens, and various microbes. In addition, researchers in this field are interested in the applications of quantum chemistry to ensure the synthesis of inorganic compounds, which are the focus of their interest, and to predict their activity and their biological and natural properties.
Researchers in this field tend to conduct analytical and statistical studies to develop and apply the latest instruments and measurements in all fields, such as estimating metallic elements in real environmental samples. They are also interested in the estimation of different drugs, whether in pharmaceuticals or biological samples, quality studies of products and environmental studies to determine the rates of pollution in different samples. Furthermore, they try to identify and describe the best methods for preparing and processing solid, liquid and gaseous samples in a form appropriate to the required measurements.
