In activation of the Saudi Vision 2030, participants in the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Life Sciences Association came up with nine fundamental recommendations. The meeting was held on Rajab 21-23, 1438H, at Holiday Inn Hotel, Al-Aziziyah. It was attended by Dr. Waleed Altaf, dean of the UQU College of Applied Sciences, and Dr. Ibrahim Aref, chairman of the association.
The recommendations included: reiterating the importance of protecting the human heritage that represents the civilizational depth of the Arab Peninsula against agricultural and industrial encroachments, etc; promoting sustainability of water resources by rationalizing use of water and reduce wasted water, as well as making optimal use of rain water and treated wastewater; making every effort to protect diversity of the wildlife by regulating grazing, encouraging afforestation and voluntary activities intended for protecting the environment; supporting and encouraging sustainable food safety projects as part of a comprehensive national strategy; raising awareness of the hazards of pesticides and the ways to get rid of them to improve public health; making all developmental enterprises subject to prior comprehensive environmental studies, and activating the relevant environmental legislations; entrenching environmental culture and education at the various educational stages; encouraging applied research at relevant universities and research centers; promoting partnerships between the public and private sectors relating to transformation to a sustainable environment society; and utilizing advanced technologies, as well as social networks, to raise the public environmental awareness.
Towards the end of the closing meeting, the participants conveyed profound thanks and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, HRH the Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, and HRH the Deputy Crown Prince, Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense, Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, may Allah protect them, for their keen interest in, and unstinting support for, the education and research sector. They extended sincere thanks to Dr. Ahmed M. al-Eisa, Minister of Education, for approving of holding the meeting, and to Dr. Badran A. al-Omar, President of King Saud University, for his continuous support for the association. They delivered, also, special thanks to Dr. Bakri M. Assas, President of Umm al-Qura University, and to all UQU staff, for hosting the event, and for the generous hospitality.
The meeting involved a main workshop, held under the theme: "Man and Environmental Development in Saudi Vision 2030", in which specialized Saudi speakers participated. Additionally, a public lecture was given by Dr. Muhammad Farouk, a renowned Pakistani researcher. That is to be added to 44 seminars covering the various life sciences, and display of 149 posters on organic agriculture in KSA.
Over the two days of the meeting, three workshops were held, an touched on several topics having to do with environmental aspects, biodiversity, wildlife, zoology, veterinary medicine, animal production, botany, microbiology and plant protection.
