In conjunction with the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020, and in light of the current circumstances of the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus around the world and the pivotal role of the 'white coat army' in combating the pandemic, the UQU will provide the health sector in Makkah with 28 graduates, who represent the first class of the College of Nursing. The college will celebrate the graduation of class 10 of its female students, whose number amounts to 81, for the academic year (1440–1441 A.H.). These graduates compete to gain the honor of humanitarian work and to serve the guests of Allah during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.
The Dean of the College of Nursing, Dr. Fatimah Al-Sulami, said that the college, since its inception, endeavors to qualify outstanding personnel in different fields of nursing. This has been implemented by providing an environment that supports practical and research practices and by serving the community, according to a scientific methodology and the direct follow-up of the academic staff members. The aim of such efforts is to enable the graduates to provide optimal healthcare and to achieve the objectives of the Quality of Life Program, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.
On his part, the graduate Muhannad Al-Otaibi clarified the passion felt by the students of the first class to support the heroes working in the health sector in combating Coronavirus. He added that the students wish to exert their utmost efforts to preserve the lives of patients, being equipped with knowledge and skills. Al-Otaibi also praised the efforts exerted by the university in supporting the skills of the students and developing their capabilities by enriching programs that meet the needs of the labor market.
The UQU students have already joined the 'Volunteering and Giving' initiative held to carry out the national and humanitarian duty by joining the first defense lines to protect Makkah against the Coronavirus epidemic. This initiative includes volunteering programs to serve patients in isolated districts and provide them with the necessary healthcare by activating mobile clinics and offering medicine. The initiative also aims to raise the awareness of the personnel working in the supply centers with the precautionary measures that should be taken to prevent the spread of the infection. The university held this initiative to hone the skills of the students in this field, according to the scientific framework acquired from the academic courses and practical applications during the period of study at the university.
It is worth mentioning that the bachelor of nursing program offered by the College of Nursing obtained accreditation from the German organization (AHPGS) in 2015 A.C. This accreditation was granted in appreciation of the efforts exerted by the administration of the college and its affiliates in reaching local leadership and regional excellence in the educational streams, field application, and scientific research conducted in the nursing programs.
