The Department of Psychology at the College of Education Activates the ‘Psychological Counseling: Culture and Dialogue’ Forum

Umm Al-Qura University aims to abide by the principle of promoting community awareness about the communal participation of teaching staff members. It also aims to enrich the counseling field of the General Education in Makkah Al-Mukaramah at the level of female students, parents, and female student counselors, and to provide the target individuals with the aspects of knowledge and applied skills needed to build a well-informed character capable of facing psychological disorders and intellectual and behavioral deviations to work on rectifying them. Moreover, it aims to secure the psychological health in a safe and sound educational environment, and to build bridges of communication between the General Department of Girls Education, represented by the Department of Guidance and Counseling at the West Makkah Education Office, and the UQU, represented by the Department of Psychology. Due to these above aims, the ‘Psychological Counseling: Culture and Dialogue’ Forum was held on Wednesday, 8 Rabi` Al-Thani 1441 A.H., under the supervision and follow-up of both Dr. Hanan Mahbub and Dr. Suzan Basyuni, from 8 a.m to 12 p.m.

The forum covered many different and meaningful events:

  • A dialogue between a psychological patient and a psychiatrist (an acting scene).
  • A lecture entitled, "Positive Protection against Intellectual Deviations", delivered by Dr. Suzan Basyuni.
  • The "Silent Shadow Theater" (an acting scene) in which some mental and psychological disorders were tackled.
  • A workshop entitled, " How to Read and Protect Our Feelings", presented by Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mahbub.
  • Relaxation therapy (with audience interaction) presented by the MA student, Nora Al-Sheikhi.
  • Personal behavior and forming habits "Procedures and Techniques", presented by the MA student, Mona Al-Sulami.

The inauguration of the forum was attended by the Manager of West Makkah Education Office, Ms. Ghuzail Al-Thubaiti, the Head of the Department of Guidance and Counseling at the West Makkah Office, Ms. Sara Al-Attyani, the two female Supervisors of Guidance and Counseling at the West Makkah office, Ms. Hanan Al-Ghamdi and Ms. Salwa Al-Khayat, the Supervisor of Guidance and Counseling at the National Office of Education, Ms. Laila Al-Hazli, the Consultant Psychiatrist at Al-Nour Hospital, Dr. Sahar Al-Sayed, and a number of female educational supervisors and postgraduate female students.

After that, an awareness exhibition was inaugurated. The exhibition witnessed the discussion of many topics offering a great deal of new discoveries in the field of protection against psychological and mental disorders, therapeutic interventions, and ways of diagnosis.

The forum was concluded with a distinctive recognition of the efforts exerted by the female organizers of this counseling event. The female educational counselors, parents, and female students expressed their desire for more therapeutic, psychological and scientific forums.

At the end of the program, the Head of West Makkah Education Office, Ms. Ghuzail Al-Thubaiti, honored Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mahbub, Her Excellency Dr. Suzan Basyuni, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Maliki for her participation in the PhD students' corner (supplementary), and all the female students who participated in the forum and the accompanying exhibition.

The Head of the Department of Psychology at the College of Education, Dr. Salim Al-Mufriji, believes that such scientific forums have high psychological value due to their contribution to the development of counseling skills of the target individuals to achieve sound national health as well as personal and psychological health.
