Department of Psychology Launches ‘For Your Sake’ Initiative for the Female Residents of Makkah Prison

Within the framework of the community partnership between the Directorate of Prisons in Makkah region, represented by the Women's Prison Administration, the initiative of "For Your Sake" was organized for the period 4–5 Rabi` Al-Thani, 1441 A.H. The event was held in cooperation with Umm Al-Qura University, represented by the Department of Psychology which oversees the provision of all community services, including psychological, guidance, educational and professional services.

The initiative was designed to provide training for more than 25% of the Saudi female prison residents in the fields of future industries, and guidance on how to deal and face the pressures of life.

The program included two courses, as follows:

  • The first course was entitled, "Be creative in designing your future". The course included three themes covering self-awareness and appreciation: decision making, inner peace and psychological immunity, and how to invest in the future.
  • The second course entitled, ''Get rid of pressure and be happy", included more than 28 objectives. The program was held under the supervision of Her Excellency Dr. Suzan bint Sadaqah Basyuni, Associate Professor of Mental Health in the Department of Psychology, and the implementation and assistance of female PhD students.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Vice Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Abeer bint Muhammad Al-Sabban, the Deputy Head of the Social Work Department, Dr. Amina bint Ahmad Al-Jindi, the former Director of the Prison, Ms. Khadija Al-Arabi, the current Director of the Prison, Ms. Nada Al-Hazmi, as well as the Director of the Guidance and Direction Center, the Deputy Head of the Yosr Women's Center, and a number of educational supervisors and graduate students.

At the conclusion of the two-day meeting, the effort exerted by those in charge of the program was appreciated for bringing happiness and smiles to the female prison residents. The trainers also expressed their readiness to provide more educational, psychological and therapeutic programs.

The Director of the Women's Prison then honored Dr. Suzan Basyuni and all the attendees, including academic staff, students, and female prison residents.

The Head of the Department of Psychology at the College of Education, Dr. Salim bin Muhammad Abdullah Al-Mufriji, stresses that such programs have high psychological value for their contribution to providing the female residents with many life skills needed during their jail sentence and after leaving the prison. He viewed the project as being positive, and extended his thanks to Dr. Suzan Basyuni and her accompanying team of postgraduate students.
