Based on the principle of sensitizing and educating the campus community on the importance of family counseling, the Department of Psychology at the College of Education established the Open Day Program for Family Counseling on Wednesday, 30 Rabi` Al-Thani, 1441 A.H., in hall 206, building (J). The event was held with the aim of raising the level of awareness of family counseling, helping family members to perform their roles perfectly, ensuring healthy growth of the members of the family, and developing positive relations between them. Other equally important aims are represented in helping to bring happiness to the family and society, by supporting family and individuals of society in facing the problems they may encounter and finding appropriate solutions to them.
The program was run under the supervision and management of Her Excellency Dr. Huda Saleh Al-Shamimri, Associate Professor of Psychological Counseling in the Department of Psychology, and a group of select PhD students specialized in psychological counseling. The program was attended by the Vice Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Abeer Al-Sabban, the Deputy Head of the Department of Psychology, Dr. Amal Badr, Deputy Director of the Psychological and Educational Research Center, Her Excellency Dr. Amani Al-Dusari, the Director of the Media Center, Dr. Manal Khuj, and a number of faculty members and students from the College of Education and other colleges, with the turnout reaching 186 attendees.
Her Excellency Dr. Huda said that the idea of the program was distinct and more effective this time, as it established mini-consultation clinics with three corners: the Marriage Counseling Corner to identify the techniques of communication and dialogue between the couple; the Family Counseling Corner to know the nature of the relationship and forms of communication between family members; the Children's Guidance Corner to identify ways to develop children's skills through play and entertainment, and to identify techniques for behavior modification in children with special needs. Besides, each corner had special counseling sessions for providing relevant advice. The number of marriage consultations reached 16 cases, the number of child-related consultations were 20 in all, and there were 12 family counseling cases.
In conclusion, Dr. Huda Al-Shamimri said that an open day will be held each semester, but in a renewed and sophisticated form, involving all departments of psychology in order to exchange experiences and fruitful cooperation between the various disciplines in the department.
