Several UQU academic staff members specialized in sport and health, who are interested in combating physical inactivity, have stressed the importance of encouraging alternative methods of entertainment in the home and directing parents on how to make the best use of their children's time and shift them away from useless entertainment, which currently consumes most of the time of children and youths.

Dr. Faisal Awad Barwais, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the Department of Physical Education, who is interested in lifestyle improvement and health promotion programs, stressed the need to find new ideas and initiatives in the area of home entertainment, within the framework of the program entitled "Quality of Life 2020," which is one of the programs designed to achieve Saudi Vision 2030.

He said, "We must pay attention to the kind of entertainment directed to children, and focus on it, and implement correct methods within their health practices, such as increasing the level of physical activity and motor exercises through using modern electronic applications and finding proper entertainment options, inside and outside home, that meet the aspirations of families and promote the concept of good health in young generations."

Dr. Sumayah Sharaf, Professor of Mental Health and Psychological Counseling at Umm Al-Qura University, stressed the importance of parents raising the awareness of their children regarding this from childhood, and encourage them to use games and means of home entertainment in correct ways, which help them develop values. They should also assist them in choosing the games that fit this purpose.

She explained that the use of electronic games has become very common, and warned that children learn wrong habits and erroneous and useless values when their parents do not take good care of them. She also clarified that this responsibility does not lie solely on the parents, but on society as a whole, through promoting the correct and proper methods of education. She then stressed the need for families to share with their children the forms of entertainment that can help build and develop their different skills. This can be realized through conscious selection of the appropriate means of entertainment, and specifying a set time for participation and dialogue spaces with children, which contributes to their psychological equilibrium and family adjustment.

This survey was conducted during one of the introductory workshops for the executive programs of Saudi Vision 2030, presented by the Initiatives Management and Vision Realization Office at Umm Al-Qura. One of these introductory programs was the Quality of Life 2020 program, which aims at improving the lifestyle of the individual and the family and building a society with a balanced lifestyle.
