The category of persons with disabilities needs the social support that one gets through the network of social relations to satisfy his/her material and psychological needs and become more able to adapt to and face the problems of life.
Therefore, taking care of persons with disabilities represents a human and social necessity; care helps them develop suitable skills to well-adapt to society. They need to merge into different activities such as the skills that are connected to their surrounding environment. Such activities and practical applications help them learn the related knowledge, values and attitudes deliberately and with discipline. They aim at building the integrated personality of the persons with disabilities that enables them to bear responsibility, deal with daily life requisites successfully, and become productive citizens.
Consider the Following Rules While Dealing with Persons with Disabilities:
- When you see a person with a particular disability, you shall avoid strong reactions such as wondering or staring so as not to embarrass him/her.
- You shall not take the initiative of helping the person with disability until he/she asks for it; you shall not act out of pity.
- You shall be positive by talking to the person with disability and avoid complaint about your personal problems.
- You shall avert usage of common expressions or proverbs that might harm the persons with disability
- If you deal with a person with hearing disability, you shall pat him/her on the shoulder to get his/her attention, talk to him/her clearly and slowly, and avoid covering your mouth with your hand.
- If you deal with a crippled person, you shall talk to him/her while in a sitting position to keep the eye-contact level.
- If you deal with a blind person, you shall touch his/her hand to let him know you are directing your speech to him, intend to describe the place and mention the names of your companions around you.
- If you deal with a mute person, you shall be patient, let him complete his sentence and adhere to short answers.
Finally, you shall not forget to draw a permanent smile on your face; it is the acceptance key for everyone.
