Umm Al-Qura University recorded 5922 volunteering hours in the service of scientific research under the supervision of the Vice Deanship of Scientific Research for Research Volunteering and Volunteering Research during the academic year (2018\2019). This was carried out by 611 volunteers, representing 29 UQU colleges and institutes.
The Vice Deanship of Scientific Research for Research Volunteering and Volunteering Research has trained 411 volunteers in five training programs which were offered over the two semesters of the current academic year, including the "Volunteering Horizons in Scientific Research" program provided to academic staff members at UQU, and the first and second preparation programs of the "Ghars (planting) Voluntary Team" offered to the volunteers from the BA, MA, and PhD female students. The programs also included those offered to the General Directorate of Education in Makkah, namely, the "Scientific Research Skills" and "Education and Performance Indicators in Light of the Saudi Vision 2030" programs.
The voluntary services offered by the Vice Deanship of Scientific Research for Research Volunteering included scientific examination and revision, organization and research participation in scientific forums, provision of research samples, conduction of scientific research, workshop organization, coordination of scientific exhibitions and competitions, and other volunteering activities. Such activities benefited UQU colleges and deanships as well as a wide range of educational institutions outside the university, such as the General Directorate of Education in Makkah and a number of researchers at Princess Nora bint Abdul-Rahman University, King Abdulaziz University (KAU), King Saud University (KSU), King Khalid University, and other universities.
The Dean of Scientific Research Dr. Abdul-Rahman bin Ghalib Al-Ahdal stated, "The deanship is working according to the requirements of the Developmental National Vision, which aims at achieving social responsibility and highlighting the research issues that serve the community. Volunteering is one of the most important issues that Umm Al-Qura University cares for, in order to promote the social role and the spirit of citizenship and belonging in the community."
Dr. Al-Ahdal thanked His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Omar Bafail, the President of Umm Al-Qura University, for his continuous efforts in the service of scientific research at the university, and His Excellency Dr. Thamir Al-Harbi, the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, for his continuous support to the activities of the deanship.
The Vice Dean of Scientific Research for Research Volunteering and Volunteering Research, Dr. Sumayyah Sharf, underlined that the voluntary services offered by the deanship are unique at the level of Saudi universities. She added that UQU was the only university to monitor the voluntary research services offered. Moreover, she highlighted that the number of volunteering hours carried out represented a quantum leap for UQU in the area of community service, and said that the deanship is concentrating its efforts towards increasing the number of volunteers and volunteering hours to achieve the ambitious objectives of the national development plan.
