At the end of the Sixth Conference for Teaching and Learning Mathematics that was held at Umm Al-Qura University, represented by the Department of Curricula and Methods of Education, in the College of Education, and organized in cooperation with the Saudi Association for Mathematical Sciences during the period 19 to 21 Rajab, 1440 A.H., specialists recommended that math books should include real life situations, experience and activities that support life skills, in all their personal, social and cognitive forms. This gives an opportunity to develop the skills of distinction and creativity, without being limited to only self-reflection levels.
Specialists stressed the necessity of paying great attention to specialized training courses for math teachers to increase their scientific knowledge of their specialization and endorse teaching methods and techniques suitable for the twenty-first century. Additionally, they asserted the importance of concentrating on measuring the outcomes of education using a variety of means that suit the nature of learners in a way that cares for the details of mathematical concepts and skills. These means should promote a scientific educational environment for creativity which is characterized by encouragement and research, and contribute to the acceptance of different ideas and viewpoints. They should also provide virtual math labs that enable students to acquire deep mathematical knowledge and treat learning problems. Moreover, actual practical programs that contribute in promoting the outcomes of the aspirations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in international competitions should be developed.
On the final day of the conference, participants discussed five main themes in five coincident workshops. In these workshops, they tackled: 'teaching according to the STEM curve', 'procedural research in learning mathematics', 'simulation in forming international exams', 'technical games for learning mathematics', and 'strategies of active learning'.
It has been stated that more than 70 researchers from inside and outside the Saudi Kingdom participated in this conference. They discussed 53 scientific papers in two days that covered fields of teaching mathematics and mathematical sciences in ten scientific sessions that witnessed outstanding presence on the part of officials and those concerned with this field, especially math teachers in the province.
