The Pragmatic Indicators in the Syntactic Debates and Issues in Alsiyūṭī’s book, “Alaʾšbāh Wannaḓāʾir”

Issue 37, Page 25-37

Abstract

The present study aims to address the most important pragmatic elements in Almunāḓarāt Walmasāʾil (debates and issues) of Alsiyūṭī’s book of grammar, “Alaʾšbāh Wannaḓāʾir”. The first element is the conversational implicature which is based on the maxims of the cooperative principle namely: quantity, quality, manner and relevance and the lately added maxim of politeness. The second element is the unveiling of the implied meanings in the light of the theory of conversational implicature. The third element is speech acts and their perlocutionary force. These elements are introduced by a preface and preliminary; and two sections that address the linguistic pragmatic concepts and the theory of conversational implicature and speech acts in the syntactic literature. Previous studies have focused on performative verbs in syntactic books. However, they did not focus on these issues in the most important section, namely Almunāḓarāt Walmasāʾil which depend on a major area of pragmatics that is Utterance. Almunāḓarāt Walmasāʾil is document that is passed to us by scholars in different contexts and sources such as listening, the conditions of the addressee, circumstances and context of speech. All this defines the problem of the study. It is recommended here that all pragmatic and other linguistic issues be studied in their due cultural contexts. The pragmatic phenomenon is represented by utterance and usage, which cannot be exemplified theoretically, but through real situations that consist of speakers and an addressee.
