Forms of the Artist’s Engagement with History and Poetry: Mahmoud Sami al-Baroudi’s Poem “Kashf al-Ghumma fi Madh Sayyid al-Umma” as an Example

Issue 37, Page 63-71

Abstract

The scope of this work focuses on examining a literary issue related to the interaction between poetry and history, starting from a poem by the Egyptian poet Mahmoud Sami Al-Baroudi, created in praise of the Prophet and based on his sacred and glorious history, relying on the biography of Ibn Hisham. The starting point of this research is to demonstrate that Al-Baroudi is, firstly, a reader of ancient poetry and of the significant poetic achievements created by major Arab poets, whether in praise of individuals or of the Prophet. Secondly, Al-Baroudi is a reader of the history related to the Prophet, his companions, and his enemies, as recorded in the book of Sira. The goal of the research is to explore the manifestations of interaction between poetry and history in the poem 'Kashf al-Ghammah' (Revealing the Sorrow) in praise of the Master of the Nation, considering that this poem is an artistic fabric representing an aesthetic experience created by the poet through writing after reading, which is evidenced by numerous signs and contexts in his aesthetic poetic achievement. This work is theoretically and methodologically based on a theoretical framework that we derived from the theory of reception. This document highlights the impact of the interaction between the writer and the reader in shaping the characteristics of the aesthetic experience, describing it as a creative encounter between the act of reading and the act of writing.
