Abstract
The study focuses on examining the portrayal of the trickster figure in the Spanish Andalusian heritage, as depicted in two key narrative works that influenced subsequent literature: The Maqāmāt of Saraqusṭī and The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes. The emergence of picaresque literature is often traced back to the Arab-Andalusian Maqāmāt, particularly the Maqāmāt of Al- Saraqusṭī, where the trickster character plays a central role in shaping the narratives. This art form, being rooted in the trickster figure, adds an intriguing layer to the stories and events depicted. The depiction of the trickster in both texts exhibits both similarities and differences, reflecting a unique perspective on a new way of life and serving as a valuable historical and artistic record that warrants further exploration. The research will delve into a comparative analysis of these texts, examining the circumstances that gave rise to them and the artistic techniques employed in their portrayal of the trickster figure. The depiction of the trickster in these narratives yields significant insights into its role in shaping Arabic and Spanish storytelling traditions.
