Since its inception, Christianity has continuously engaged with mystical ideas—to varying degrees depending on the prevailing influences. Claims are falsely attributed to Christ as the founder of the foundations of mysticism, drawing upon his sayings and actions; this trajectory extends from the founding figures of altered Christianity—such as Paul—through the establishment of key mystical tenets in the early Middle Ages by figures like Saint Augustine and Gregory, to the late Middle Ages, which saw the emergence of German mysticism through Meister Eckhart. Furthermore, the unique circumstances surrounding the rise of Christianity—characterized by persecution, fragmentation, and other factors—led the monastic fathers who shaped ecclesiastical concepts to uncritically adopt ideas from diverse pagan, Greek, and Eastern sources. The research concluded that the structure of distorted Christianity is Gnostic and esoteric rather than rational. Furthermore, the Protestant Reformation rejected the monastic and ascetic systems that fostered mysticism, holding that salvation through grace and faith obviates the need for arduous mystical purification practices. The study also noted that, despite the evolution of modern philosophy, mystical ideas have been invoked to shield corrupt beliefs from criticism; likewise, the invocation of mysticism within modern Christianity—allied as it is with secularism—serves to fill a spiritual void born of the psychological emptiness characteristic of the era of materialist dominance
