Dr. Rana Khalid Basfar, an assistaant professor of English Literature, participated in the
Annual conference of the American Comparative Literature Association (8-11 April, 2021) by organizing a two-day session entitled “Rediscovering the
Arabian Nights” about the contemporary trends, adaptations, and literary studies of
The One Thousand and One Nights. She also presented a paper entitled “The Re-creation of The
Nights in François Verster’s
The Dream of Shahrazad.” This paper focuses on
The Dream of Shahrazad (2014) by Emmy-Award-winning South African documentary film maker/director François Verster. This key contemporary film re-works the
Nights and innovatively re-creates a modern visual tale influenced by the
Nights’ narrative paradigm—both atheistically and formally.
