President of Umm Al-Qura university Dr. Bakri bin M'atooq bin Bakri Assas attended teaching and evaluation workshop presented by the delegation of University College of London (UCL) at the College of Medicine during their third visit to the college from March 26 to 30 2017. The workshop was attended by UQU Vice President for Academic Development and Community Service, acting UQU Vice President for Business and innovation Dr. Hani bin Osman Ghazi, Dean of Medicine College Dr. Anmar Nassir and a constellation including college vice deans and faculty members. The workshop took place at the college meeting's hall at the university campus in Abdiya on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
Meanwhile, Dr. Assas stressed that organizing such workshops come to updating study program in line with the Kingdom vision 2030 pointing out that updating program of the college of medicine (the updated curriculum) will have a positive impact on all levels of the college and will help graduate highly-efficient physicians who will offer high quality and integrated healthcare. He added in comparison to the old one, the new curriculum introduces medical volunteering at Hajj and Umrah seasons to instill values of volunteering work in the graduates of the university lauding the efforts exerted by the college of medicine towards updating project.
For his part, Dean of Medicine College Dr. Anmar Nassir said they have organized 20 workshops and discussion panels to focus on best practices of medical education in teaching and evaluation. He added the program included workshops for male and female administrative officers to develop and improve administrative practices at the college in addition to workshops for students who are involved in teaching their students counterparts. He said the delegation also attended some teaching activities for evaluation and met with some students of the second year who started the updated curriculum experimentally to ensure achieving the sought-after objectives.
He went on to add that the updated curriculum is reckoned integrated and interrelated and focuses on the necessary skills and competencies of the efficient physician besides knowledge and medical classes to provide students with new interactive techniques. He added that the updated curriculum introduces part of clinical education at an early stage in the second year. It includes two types of study courses: horizontal courses representing what will be studied in every year and vertical courses containing eight educational courses to be studied throughout study years intended to study medicine as one integrated unit by increasing learned skills every other year.
Concluding his speech, Dr. Anmar lauded support and follow-up of UQU President Dr. Bakri Assas and his interest in developing the educational system at the college leading the college to surpass many of its counterparts in other universities.
